- 363 – The Roman emperor Julian led his army to victory against the Sasanian army in the Battle of Ctesiphon. This battle happened near the capital city of the Sasanian people, but the Romans couldn't capture the city itself.
- 1108 – In the Battle of Uclés, soldiers from the Almoravid group, led by Tamim ibn Yusuf, defeated an alliance of armies from the Castile and León.
- 1167 – A Roman army that supported Pope Alexander III was defeated in the Battle of Monte Porzio by armies led by Christian of Buch and Rainald of Dassel.
- 1176 – The Lombard League, a group of northern Italian cities, defeated Emperor Frederick I in the Battle of Legnano.
- 1233 – During the Mongol–Jin war, the Mongols entered Kaifeng after a successful siege. They began to take valuable items from the city, which was the capital of the Jin dynasty.
- 1328 – Philip VI was crowned King of France.
- 1416 – In the Battle of Gallipoli, the Venetians, led by Pietro Loredan, defeated a much larger fleet from the Ottoman Empire near Gallipoli.
- 1453 – The Fall of Constantinople happened when Ottoman armies, led by Sultan Mehmed II, captured Constantinople after a 53-day siege. This event marked the end of the Roman Empire after more than 2,000 years.

- 1658 – The Battle of Samugarh was a very important battle in the fight for the throne during the Mughal war of succession (1658–1659).

- 1733 – In Quebec City, a rule was confirmed that allowed settlers in New France to force Native people into labor.
- 1780 – During the American Revolutionary War, at the Battle of Waxhaws, British soldiers continued fighting even after American soldiers gave up, causing many casualties.

- 1914 – The large ship RMS Empress of Ireland sank in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, and 1,012 people lost their lives.
