Bernard Clavel facts for kids
Bernard Charles Henri Clavel (born May 29, 1923 – died October 5, 2010) was a famous French writer. He was born in Lons-le-Saunier, France. Bernard Clavel came from a simple family and mostly taught himself.
When he was 14, he started working as an apprentice pastry cook. Later, he had many different jobs. In the 1950s, he began working as a journalist. After a big war, he worked for social insurance. He could not focus on writing full-time until 1964. He lived and worked in many places. At the time of his death, he was living in Savoy.
His first novel was L'Ouvrier de la nuit (which means Night Worker). It was published in 1956. After that, he wrote many books for young people. He also wrote many novels for adults. Some of his novels were part of long series. These included La grande patience (The Great Patience), which had four books. Another series was Les Colonnes du ciel (Heaven's Pillars), with five books. He also wrote Le Royaume du nord (Northern Kingdom), which had six books.
Bernard Clavel used simple language in his stories. He often wrote about ordinary people. He also believed in human values. His books often questioned violence and war. He passed away in Grenoble, France.

Bernard Clavel received several important awards for his writing.
- He won the famous Prix Goncourt in 1968. This was for his book Les Fruits de l'hiver. The Prix Goncourt is one of France's most important literary prizes.
- He was a member of the Académie Goncourt from 1971 to 1977. This is the group that gives out the Prix Goncourt.
- He was also a member of groups that promoted peace. These included the French Coordination for the Decade of Culture of Peace and Non-Violence. He also joined the Non-Violence XXI group in 2001.
