Roberto Enrique Vargas Vélez (May 29, 1929 – May 27, 2014) was a talented baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball for the Milwaukee Braves during the 1955 season. Roberto was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He was known for throwing with his left hand.
Roberto Vargas was one of the first ten baseball players from Puerto Rico to play in the major leagues. He made his first appearance for the Milwaukee Braves on April 17, 1955. On the very same day, another famous Puerto Rican player, Roberto Clemente, also made his debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Roberto's Baseball Journey
Roberto played in 25 games for the Braves as a relief pitcher. A relief pitcher comes into the game after the starting pitcher. He pitched for about 24 innings. During this time, he had 13 strikeouts. A strikeout is when a pitcher gets three strikes on a batter, and the batter is out.
Playing in Different Leagues
After his time in Major League Baseball, Roberto Vargas played for many other teams. He had played for the Chicago American Giants in the Negro American League back in 1948. From 1949 to 1960, he played for 11 different teams in eight different leagues. This shows how much he loved baseball and how long his career was.
He also spent four years playing in the Mexican League. In addition, he played winter baseball in Puerto Rico from 1947 to 1961. He even represented his country several times in the Caribbean Series tournament.
A Coach and Mentor
After his playing days, Roberto Vargas had a long career as a coach and manager. He worked in the Puerto Rico winter league. He was great at teaching young pitchers. He would advise them on important skills, like throwing strikes on the first pitch. He taught them how to pitch effectively to batters.

Roberto Vargas passed away in 2014 in Caguas, Puerto Rico. He died just two days before his 85th birthday.
