The Prime Minister of Myanmar is the main leader of the government in Myanmar. This important job was brought back in 2021 by the State Administration Council (SAC). The SAC is a group that currently leads the country.

The Prime Minister leads a temporary government that works under the SAC. Even though Myanmar's constitution says the President is the head of government, the Prime Minister role was re-established. The current Prime Minister is Min Aung Hlaing. He is also the leader of the SAC. This position has been used by military governments in Myanmar before, as recently as 2011.

History of the Prime Minister's Role

The job of Prime Minister was first created in 1948. This happened when Myanmar became independent from the United Kingdom. Since then, many people have held this position. Because Myanmar has had long periods of military rule, it's been common for the Prime Minister to be a military officer.

Changes in Power Over Time

The actual power of the Prime Minister has changed a lot over the years. It depended on who was in the role. For example, in 2004, there was a disagreement between the country's leader, Senior General Than Shwe, and his Prime Minister, General Khin Nyunt. This led to the Prime Minister being removed from his job.

When the Role Was Abolished and Re-established

The position of Prime Minister was officially ended on March 30, 2011. This was based on Myanmar's Constitution, which said the President would be both the head of state and the head of government.

However, after the 2015 election, Aung San Suu Kyi could not become President. So, a new role called State Counsellor was created for her in 2016. This role worked very much like a Prime Minister.

Then, on August 1, 2021, the State Administration Council formed a new government. The chairman of the SAC became the Prime Minister.
