The prime minister of Myanmar (Burmese: မြန်မာနိုင်ငံတော်ဝန်ကြီးချုပ်; MLCTS: mranmounghaṅ wan kri khuup.) is the head of government for the country of Myanmar. This important role was brought back in 2021 by the State Administration Council (SAC). The SAC is a group of military leaders who currently govern the country. The prime minister leads a temporary government that works under the SAC.

The 2008 Constitution of Myanmar does not actually mention a prime minister. Instead, it says the president is the head of government. The person currently serving as prime minister is Min Aung Hlaing. He is also the leader of the SAC and the top commander of the armed forces. This position has been used by military governments in the past, most recently until 2011.

How the Prime Minister's Role Began

The job of prime minister was first created in 1948. This happened when Myanmar (then called Burma) gained its independence from the United Kingdom. Since then, eleven different people have held this position. Some of them even served more than once. Because Myanmar has often been ruled by the military, it is common for the prime minister to be a military officer.

The amount of power the prime minister has had has changed a lot over time. It depends on who is in the role. For example, in 2004, there was a big change in leadership. The prime minister at the time, General Khin Nyunt, was removed from his position.

The role of prime minister was officially ended on March 30, 2011. This was because of the country's constitution, which was adopted in 2008. This constitution stated that the president would be both the head of state and the head of government.

However, after the 2015 election, Aung San Suu Kyi could not become president due to the constitution. So, a new position was created for her on April 6, 2016. This new job was called State Counsellor, and it worked very much like a prime minister.

On August 1, 2021, the State Administration Council formed a temporary government. At that time, the chairman of the SAC became the prime minister.
