The State Counsellor of Myanmar (Burmese: နိုင်ငံတော်၏ အတိုင်ပင်ခံပုဂ္ဂိုလ်) was a special job title in Myanmar. This person was like the main leader of the government, similar to a prime minister.

Right now, no one holds this job. The first and only State Counsellor, Aung San Suu Kyi, was removed from office in February 2021. This job was created in 2016 because the rules in Myanmar's constitution stopped Aung San Suu Kyi from becoming president. The person in this role could talk to different government groups and people officially. They were also responsible to the country's parliament.

Why the Job Was Created

The job of State Counsellor started on April 6, 2016. It was made to give Aung San Suu Kyi a bigger role in the Government of Myanmar. Her political party, the National League for Democracy, won a huge election in 2015.

However, Aung San Suu Kyi could not become the President of Myanmar. This was because her late husband was British, and her two children also have British citizenship. Myanmar's constitution has a rule against this.

To create this new job, a special law was needed. The upper house of the parliament approved the law on April 1, 2016. The lower house approved it on April 5, 2016. Then, the President at the time, Htin Kyaw, signed it into law on April 6, 2016.

The law specifically mentioned Aung San Suu Kyi. It also listed important goals for the country. These goals included having a democratic system with many political parties. They also aimed for a good market economy and a united country. Another goal was to bring peace and development to Myanmar.

What the State Counsellor Did

The State Counsellor's job was much like a prime minister. The person in this role could work on many different government issues. They also helped connect the government's executive branch (which carries out laws) with the legislative branch (which makes laws).

The State Counsellor served for five years. This was the same amount of time as the President's term.

Who Was the State Counsellor?

The only person to ever hold the title of State Counsellor was Aung San Suu Kyi. She was born in 1945. She served as State Counsellor from April 6, 2016, until February 1, 2021.

Aung San Suu Kyi belonged to the National League for Democracy party. During her time as State Counsellor, she also held other important jobs. She was the Minister for Foreign Affairs. She was also in charge of the President's Office. She was also the leader of her party, which had the most seats in parliament. She was removed from office on February 1, 2021.
