Playing Career
Early Club Days
Marco Cassetti started his football journey at Montichiari. This was an amateur club near his hometown of Brescia. He played there for two seasons. During this time, he appeared in 30 games and scored six goals.
After Montichiari, he moved to Lumezzane. This team played in Serie C1, a professional league. He stayed there for two years as well.
Making it to Serie A
Cassetti made his big debut in Serie A with Verona. This happened in a 1–1 draw against Bari. For his first two years at Verona, he was often a substitute player. However, he became a regular starter in his third year. This was after the team was moved down to Serie B. After his time at Verona, he became a key player for Lecce. He played with them for three seasons.
Time at AS Roma
In the 2006–07 season, Cassetti left Lecce to join Roma. He signed a four-year contract. This move happened because Lecce had been moved down a league. His teammate, Mirko Vučinić, also joined Roma.
In December 2009, Marco scored an important goal against Lazio. This made him a hero for many Roma fans. He signed new contracts with Roma in 2010 and 2011.
Later, he played less often as a right-back. Another player, Aleandro Rosi, was often chosen instead. Cassetti also had an injury in the 2011–12 season. He felt that the coach, Luis Enrique, saw him more as a central defender than a right-back. At the end of the 2011–12 season, Roma decided not to offer him a new contract. So, he left the club.
Moving to England with Watford
On August 23, 2012, Cassetti signed a one-year deal with Udinese. On the same day, he agreed to join Watford on loan for the season. Udinese did not announce his signing publicly. This meant the move was mainly to help Watford, an English Championship club.
In June 2013, Cassetti officially joined Watford permanently. He scored his first goal for Watford on March 25, 2014. This was in a 3–3 draw against Blackburn Rovers.
After two years at Watford, Cassetti announced he would leave the club in May 2014. His contract was ending. In January 2015, he agreed to join Como, a team in Italy's Lega Pro league.
International Career
Marco Cassetti played for the Italian national team five times. He was the first player from Lecce to play for the national team. This happened when he earned his first cap in 2005. His last game for Italy was in 2008. Italy won 2–1 against Cyprus in a World Cup qualification game.
Coaching Career
In September 2020, Cassetti successfully earned his UEFA Pro coaching license. This is a high-level coaching qualification.
Later in 2022, Cassetti returned to Roma. He joined the club as a youth coach, helping to train younger players.
In December 2023, Cassetti became the temporary head coach for Como. This happened because the regular coach, Cesc Fàbregas, had a coaching license issue. Also, the new head coach, Osian Roberts, was not officially confirmed yet. Cassetti coached Como in one game. He led the team to a 2–1 away win against Cosenza on December 26, 2023.
