Marco Cassetti: A Football Journey
Starting His Football Career
Marco Cassetti began his football journey at a club called Montichiari. This was an amateur team in the area where he grew up. He played there for two seasons, appearing in 30 games and scoring six goals.
After Montichiari, he moved to Lumezzane. This team played in a higher league called Serie C1. Marco stayed with Lumezzane for two years as well.
Playing in Italy's Top League
Marco made his first appearance in Italy's top football league, Serie A, with Verona. This happened in a game that ended in a 1–1 draw against Bari. For his first two years with Verona, he was often a substitute player. However, he became a regular starter the next year. This was when the team was moved down to a league called Serie B. After his time at Verona, Marco became a key player for Lecce, where he played for three seasons.
Joining AS Roma
In the 2006–07 season, Marco Cassetti left Lecce to join Roma. He signed a four-year contract with the club. Another player, Mirko Vučinić, also joined Roma from Lecce around the same time. In June 2007, Roma fully bought Marco's player rights.
In December 2009, Marco scored a winning goal against Lazio. This made him a hero for many Roma fans. On June 3, 2010, he signed a new one-year deal with Roma. His salary also increased at this time. His contract was renewed again in March 2011.
Later, Marco became a second-choice player for the right-back position. Another player, Aleandro Rosi, was often chosen to play instead of him. Marco played only five matches in the first part of the 2011–12 season because of an injury. Towards the end of that season, he mentioned that he played less because the manager, Luis Enrique, saw him more as a central defender than a right-back.
At the end of the 2011–12 season, Roma decided not to offer Marco a new contract. This meant he would leave the club.
Adventure in England with Watford
On August 23, 2012, Marco Cassetti signed with Udinese. On the same day, he agreed to join Watford in England for a season-long loan. Udinese did not announce his signing much. This suggests the move was mainly to help the English Championship club.
In June 2013, Marco signed a permanent contract with Watford. He scored his first goal for the club in a 3–3 draw against Blackburn Rovers on March 25, 2014.
After two years at Watford, Marco announced he would leave the club in May 2014. In January 2015, Marco agreed to join an Italian team called Como.
Playing for Italy
Marco Cassetti played for the Italian national team five times. He was the first player from Lecce to ever play for the national team when he got his first chance in 2005. His last game for Italy was in 2008. It was a 2–1 win against Cyprus during the qualifiers for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
After Playing: Coaching Career
In September 2020, Marco Cassetti successfully earned his UEFA Pro coaching license. This license allows him to coach professional football teams.
Later in 2022, Marco agreed to return to Roma as a youth coach. He helped train the younger players at the club.
In December 2023, Marco Cassetti briefly served as the head coach for Como. This happened because the regular coach's authorization had expired. In his only game in charge, he led Como to a 2–1 away win against Cosenza on December 26, 2023.
