Arnold Susi (born January 4, 1896 – died May 29, 1968) was an important Estonian lawyer. He also served as the Minister of Education in the Estonian government. This government was formed by Otto Tief on September 18, 1944, during World War II.

Arnold Susi: A Champion for Education
Arnold Susi was born in 1896 in a region called Kuban Oblast. This area was part of the Russian Empire at the time. He became a lawyer, a person who helps people with legal problems. Later, he took on a big role in his country. He became the Minister of Education for Estonia. This happened during World War II, a very challenging period for Estonia.
A Special Friendship in Prison
In 1945, Arnold Susi was held in a Soviet prison. There, he met and became friends with a famous writer named Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Years later, in the 1960s, Solzhenitsyn was writing a very important book. This book was called The Gulag Archipelago. Solzhenitsyn actually hid at Susi's country house in Estonia while he was writing it. Solzhenitsyn even wrote a little bit about meeting Arnold Susi in his book.
Sharing Stories and Inspiring Others
Arnold Susi also wrote his own book. It was about his experiences during World War I. The book was titled Doom of the Russian Empire (in Estonian: Vene impeeriumi hukk). He wrote this book while he was in a place called Abakan. Arnold Susi passed away in Tallinn, Estonia, when he was 72 years old.
An Award for Courageous Voices
In 2019, the Estonian Ministry of Justice created a special award. It is called the Heli and Arnold Susi Mission Award for the Courage to Speak Out. This award celebrates people who are brave enough to use their words. It honors those who stand up for important ideas like democracy and human rights.
