- 3114 BC – The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar began. This calendar was used by ancient civilizations like the Maya in Central America.
- 2492 BC – A traditional story says that Hayk, the founder of the Armenian nation, defeated a mythical figure named Bel.
- AD 106 – A part of Dacia (which is now Romania) became a Roman province. It was called Roman Dacia.
- AD 117 – Hadrian was named Roman emperor. This happened just two days after the previous emperor, Trajan, passed away.
- 355 – Claudius Silvanus declared himself Roman Emperor. He was accused of treason against Emperor Constantius II.
- 490 – In the Battle of Adda, the Goths led by Theodoric the Great and Alaric II defeated the army of Odoacer near Milan.
- 923 – The Qarmatians from Bahrayn attacked and robbed the city of Basra.
- 1315 – The Great Famine of Europe was so bad that even the King of England struggled to buy bread.
- 1332 – During the Wars of Scottish Independence, the Scots, led by Domhnall II, Earl of Mar, were defeated by Edward Balliol at the Battle of Dupplin Moor.

- 1812 – During the Peninsular War, French soldiers fought against British and Portuguese forces in the Battle of Majadahonda.
- 1813 – In Colombia, Juan del Corral announced that Antioquia was independent.
- 1858 – The Eiger mountain in the Bernese Alps was climbed for the very first time. Charles Barrington made the climb with Christian Almer and Peter Bohren.
- 1871 – A large explosion of guncotton happened in Stowmarket, England, killing 28 people.
- 1898 – In the Spanish–American War, American troops entered the city of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico.

- 1979 – Two Aeroflot planes collided in the air over the Ukrainian city of Dniprodzerzhynsk. All 178 people on both planes died.
