Big Changes in Power
In 1774, two major leaders passed away, leading to new rulers taking their place.
New Sultans and Kings
- On January 21, Mustafa III, the leader (called Sultan) of the Ottoman Empire, died. His brother, Abd-ul-Hamid I, became the new Sultan. The Ottoman Empire was a very large and powerful empire that controlled much of Southeast Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East for centuries.
- On May 10, Louis XVI became the new King of France. He was a young king who would face many challenges during his rule.
Trouble in the American Colonies
The year 1774 was a big one for the American colonists and their relationship with Great Britain. Tensions were rising, leading to important meetings and new laws.
Unpopular New Laws
- On June 2, the British government brought back a law called the Quartering Act. This law forced American colonists to let British soldiers stay in their homes. The colonists were very unhappy about this, as they felt it was an invasion of their privacy and rights. This act was part of a group of laws known as the Intolerable Acts, which made the colonists even angrier.
- The British also passed the Quebec Act. This law set new rules for how the colony of Quebec in British North America would be governed. It expanded Quebec's territory and allowed French civil law and the Catholic Church to be more prominent, which also upset some American colonists.
Coming Together for Freedom
- On September 5, the First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This was a very important meeting where representatives from the American colonies came together. They discussed their problems with Great Britain and decided how to respond to the new laws and taxes. This meeting was a big step towards the American Revolution.
End of a Big War
A long war between two major empires finally came to an end in 1774.
Russia and the Ottoman Empire
- On July 21, the Russo-Turkish War, 1768-1774 officially ended. This war had been going on for six years between Russia and the Ottoman Empire.
- To end the war, they signed a peace agreement called the Treaty of Kuchuk-Kainarji. This treaty gave Russia more power and influence. It also gave Russia the right to protect Christian people living in the Ottoman Empire, which meant Russia could get involved in Ottoman politics.
Births
- September 26 – Johnny Appleseed, an American pioneer who planted apple trees across the Midwest.
