Ancient Times and Middle Ages

  • 46 BC – The famous Roman leader Julius Caesar dedicated a special temple to the goddess Venus Genetrix. He had promised to do this during a big battle.
  • 715 – In a battle at Compiègne, a leader named Ragenfrid won against Theudoald.
  • 1087William II became the King of England. He ruled for many years, until 1100.
  • 1212 – A special document called the Golden Bull of Sicily was created. It officially made sure that the Přemyslid family would always be the kings of Bohemia.
  • 1345 – During the Friso-Hollandic Wars, the Frisians won a battle against Holland at Warns.
  • 1371 – In the Serbian–Turkish wars, the Ottoman Turks fought against a Serbian army in the Battle of Maritsa.
  • 1423 – During the Hundred Years' War, a French army defeated the English at the Battle of La Brossinière.
  • 1493 – Pope Alexander VI issued a special order called Dudum siquidem. This order gave more new lands to the Spanish, adding to what he had given them before.
  • 1580 – The famous explorer Francis Drake completed his journey around the world, arriving back in Plymouth, England.

From the 1600s to the 1900s

  • 1687 – During a war, the Parthenon in Athens was partly destroyed. It was being used to store gunpowder by the Ottoman army when Venetian forces attacked it.
  • 1688 – The city of Amsterdam decided to support William of Orange's plan to invade England. This event later became known as the Glorious Revolution.
  • 1777 – In the American Revolution, British soldiers took control of the city of Philadelphia.
  • 1789George Washington, the first President of the United States, chose Thomas Jefferson to be the very first Secretary of State.
  • 1799 – During the War of the 2nd Coalition, French troops defeated Austro-Russian forces. This led to the end of a military campaign by Suvorov.
  • 1810 – Sweden adopted a new law about who would become king or queen. Because of this, Jean Baptiste Bernadotte became the next in line to the Swedish throne.

Modern Era: 1900s to Today

  • 1905 – The famous scientist Albert Einstein published one of his most important papers. In it, he introduced his special theory of relativity, which changed how we understand space and time.
  • 1907 – New Zealand and Newfoundland, which were British colonies, were given a higher status and became "dominions" within the British Empire.
  • 1914 – The United States Federal Trade Commission was created. This government agency helps protect consumers and prevent unfair business practices.
  • 1917World War I: The Battle of Polygon Wood began.
  • 1918 – World War I: The Meuse-Argonne Offensive started. This was a very important battle that continued until German forces completely surrendered.
  • 1923 – The German government agreed to the occupation of the Ruhr region by French and Belgian troops.
  • 1933 – When gangster Machine Gun Kelly surrendered to the FBI, he famously yelled, "Don't shoot, G-Men!" This phrase then became a popular nickname for FBI agents.
  • 1934 – The large ocean liner RMS Queen Mary was officially launched.
  • 1950 – Korean War: United Nations troops successfully took back the city of Seoul from North Korean forces.
  • 1953 – In the United Kingdom, the rationing of sugar, which had been in place since World War II, finally ended.
  • 1954 – The Japanese ferry Tōya Maru sank during a typhoon in Japan, sadly killing 1,172 people.
  • 1959Typhoon Vera, the strongest typhoon ever recorded to hit Japan, caused huge damage. It killed 4,580 people and left almost 1.6 million people without homes.
  • 1960 – In Chicago, the first ever televised debate between presidential candidates took place. Richard M. Nixon and John F. Kennedy debated on TV.
  • 1969Abbey Road, the very last album recorded by the famous band The Beatles, was released.
  • 1973 – The Concorde airplane made its first non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean, setting a new speed record.
  • 1980 – A terror attack at the Oktoberfest terror attack festival in Munich resulted in 13 deaths and 211 injuries.
  • 1981 – Baseball pitcher Nolan Ryan set a Major League record by throwing his fifth no-hitter game.
  • 1983 – A Soviet Air Force officer named Stanislav Petrov prevented a potential nuclear war. He correctly identified a report of incoming nuclear missiles as a computer error and not an actual attack.
  • 1983 – The yacht Australia II won the America's Cup sailing race. This ended the New York Yacht Club's 132-year winning streak.
  • 1984 – The United Kingdom and China agreed that Hong Kong would be returned to China in 1997.
  • 1992 – A Nigerian Air Force plane crashed in Ejigbo, Lagos, killing 159 people.
  • 1997 – A Garuda Indonesia plane crashed near Medan airport, killing 234 people.
  • 1997 – An earthquake hit parts of Italy, causing a section of the Basilica of St. Francis at Assisi to collapse.
  • 2002 – The overcrowded Senegalese ferry, MV Le Joola, capsized off the coast of the Gambia, tragically killing more than 1,000 people.
  • 2008 – Swiss pilot and inventor Yves Rossy became the first person to fly across the English Channel using a jet engine-powered wing.
  • 2009 – Typhoon Ketsana caused widespread damage and 700 deaths across the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand.
