The year 1626 was a time of many important changes around the world. New leaders took power, big buildings were finished, and new settlements were started.
Key Events of 1626
- September 30 – Nurhaci, a powerful leader of the Jurchen people, passed away. He was the founder of the Qing dynasty, a very important empire in China. His son, Huang Taiji, became the new leader.
- November 18 – The new St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City was officially opened and blessed. This huge church is a very famous building. Its opening happened on the same date as the original church was opened way back in 326.
- Spain set up a trading post on the island of Taiwan. This helped them trade goods with people in Asia.
- Peter Minuit, who was in charge of the New Netherland colony, started a plan to buy land on Manhattan Island from the Lenape people.
- Work began on building the famous sailing ship called the Vasa.
- The small state of Urbino became part of the Papal States, which were lands ruled by the Pope.
- The English Parliament tried to remove George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham from his position. He was a close friend and advisor to King Charles I of England.
- King Charles I decided to close down the Parliament for a while.
- The Dutch people settled on Manhattan Island and started a town called New Amsterdam. This town would later grow into a big part of what is now New York City.
- In New England, the town of Salem, Massachusetts was founded at a place called Naumkeag.
