The year 1810 was a time of big changes around the world, especially in Europe and the Americas. Many countries in South America began their fight for independence from Spain, while Napoleon continued to shape Europe. It was also a year for new businesses and fun traditions!

Important Events of 1810
Napoleon's Marriages
- On January 10, the marriage between Napoleon and Josephine officially ended.
- Just two months later, on March 11, Napoleon married Marie-Louise of Austria. This marriage was important for political reasons.
Independence Movements in the Americas
Many countries in the Americas started their journey to become independent nations in 1810.
- On April 19, Venezuela took a big step towards ruling itself. The people of Caracas removed their Spanish governor, Emparan, and set up their own local government.
- On May 25, armed citizens in Buenos Aires (which is now in Argentina) kicked out the Spanish Viceroy. They then created their own government for the region.
- Colombia declared its independence from Spain on July 20. This was a major moment for the country.
- A city in modern-day Colombia, Mompos, also declared its independence from the Spanish Empire on August 6.
- On September 16, the Mexican War of Independence began. This day is known as Dieciséis de septiembre and is a very important national holiday in Mexico.
- Chile formed its first National Junta on September 18. This was their first step towards becoming an independent nation.
- The United States also expanded its territory by taking over West Florida from Spain on October 27.
Business and Exploration
- On June 23, a businessman named John Jacob Astor started a new company called the Pacific Fur Company. This company was involved in trading animal furs.
- The Tonquin, a ship carrying 33 employees of Astor's new company, sailed from New York Harbor on September 8. After a long journey, they reached the Columbia River. There, Astor's men built a fur-trading town called Astoria.
Other Notable Events
- A Tyrolean rebel leader named Andreas Hofer was executed on January 20. He had led a rebellion against Napoleon's rule.
- In July, Napoleon took control of the Kingdom of Holland, adding it to his empire.
- On September 26, Sweden adopted a new rule about who would become king or queen. Jean Baptiste Bernadotte became the next in line to the Swedish throne.
- The very first Oktoberfest celebration took place on October 12. The royal family of Bavaria invited the people of Munich to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese. This became a famous annual festival.
- On November 10, a funny event called the Berners Street Hoax happened in London. A prankster named Theodore Hook managed to trick many people into going to 53 Berners Street.
- King George III of the United Kingdom was recognized as being unwell.
- In present-day Mali, a leader named Amadou Lobbo started a religious movement called a jihad.
- Russia gained control of Sukhumi through an agreement with local leaders. They also declared that they would protect the entire region of Abkhazia.
- The first steamboat traveled on the Ohio River, which was a big step for transportation.
