Garuda Indonesia Flight 152 facts for kids
Garuda Indonesia Flight 152 was a regular passenger flight in Indonesia. It flew from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, the capital city, to Polonia International Airport in Medan, North Sumatra. The plane used for this flight was an Airbus A300, operated by Garuda Indonesia, a major airline.
On September 26, 1997, Flight 152 crashed into a forest. This happened about 30 miles (48 km) from Medan. The weather was very bad with low visibility. This was due to a thick haze covering Southeast Asia that year. Sadly, all 234 people on board, including passengers and crew, died in the accident. The pilot, Hance Rahmowiyogo, was 42 years old. He had over 20 years of flying experience with Garuda Indonesia. He had flown for more than 12,000 hours. The crash site was in a deep valley near a village called Buah Nabar. This village is in the Sibolangit area, south of Medan.
Flight 152 is still the deadliest single-plane crash in Indonesia's history. It was also the worst aviation accident in the world in 1997.
