About Doug Supernaw
Doug Supernaw was born in Bryan, Texas, on September 26, 1960. He grew up in a place called Inwood Forest. Doug loved to play golf and was part of his high school golf team.
His mother enjoyed country music very much. She introduced him to artists like George Jones and Gene Watson. These musicians later inspired Doug's own music style. Doug even went to college on a golf scholarship.
In 1979, Doug left college. He worked for a short time on an oil rig. After that, he became a musician in local bands. In 1987, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, which is a big city for country music. There, he worked writing songs for other artists.
After four years in Nashville, Doug moved back to Texas. He started his own band called Texas Steel.
Starting His Music Career
A talent scout from RCA Records discovered Doug Supernaw. He signed Doug to their BNA Entertainment division in 1993. That same year, Doug released his first album, Red and Rio Grande.
Four songs were released from this album. The first song, "Honky Tonkin' Fool," did not make it into the top 40 country songs. But the second song, "Reno," quickly reached the top 5. His next song, "I Don't Call Him Daddy", became Doug's only number one hit by the end of 1993. This album was very successful and earned a gold certification in the United States.
Doug faced some health challenges after his first album came out. He recovered and then recorded his second album for BNA. This album, Deep Thoughts from a Shallow Mind, was released in 1994. Only one song from this album, "What'll You Do About Me", made it into the top 40. Soon after this album, he left BNA Records.
In 1994, Doug Supernaw was nominated for Top New Male Vocalist by the Academy of Country Music. He was nominated alongside John Michael Montgomery and Clay Walker. John Michael Montgomery won the award that year.
Later Albums and Collaborations
In 1995, Doug signed with Giant Records. He released his third major album, You Still Got Me, in 1996. The first song from this album, "Not Enough Hours in the Night," was very popular. It reached number 3 on the country music charts. However, the other songs from the album did not reach the top 40. Doug left Giant Records soon after.
In 1996, Doug also appeared on an album by the Beach Boys called Stars and Stripes Vol. 1. On this album, the Beach Boys sang their own songs with other country music artists. Doug Supernaw sang on the song "Long Tall Texan." His first collection of songs, The Encore Collection, was released in 1997.
Doug signed another record deal with a small company called Tack. He released his album Fadin' Renegade on August 31, 1999. The two songs from this album, "Fadin' Renegade" and "21–17," did not appear on the country music charts.
