Joe Sherlock (born September 26, 1930 – died September 10, 2007) was an important Irish politician. He was a member of the Labour Party. Joe Sherlock served as a Teachta Dála (TD), which is like a member of parliament in Ireland. He was a TD three times: from 2002 to 2007, from 1987 to 1992, and from 1981 to 1982. He also served as a Senator from 1993 to 1997. The Seanad Éireann is the upper house of the Irish parliament.

Joe Sherlock's Early Life and Political Start

Joe Sherlock was born in a place called Kildorrery in County Cork, Ireland, in 1930. He went to the local school there. When he was young, he was involved in a movement that aimed to bring about social change. This led to him spending some time in Mountjoy Prison.

After this experience, he decided to focus on social activism and politics. He worked at a local sugar factory for 18 years. His political journey began in 1967. That year, he was elected to the Mallow Urban District Council. This was his first public office.

Joining Local Councils

In 1970, there was a big change in the political group he was part of. Joe Sherlock chose to stay with the "Official" part of the movement. In 1974, he was elected to the Cork County Council. This meant he was serving on two local councils at the same time.

He also became the Chairperson of the Mallow Urban District Council. He held both of these local council positions for many years. He continued to serve on these councils until 2003.

Joe Sherlock's Time in Dáil Éireann

Joe Sherlock was first elected to Dáil Éireann in the 1981 general election. The Dáil Éireann is the main house of the Irish parliament. He was elected as a TD for the Sinn Féin - The Workers' Party.

Serving as a TD

He was elected again in February 1982. However, he lost his seat in the November 1982 election. Even though he was no longer a TD, he stayed very active in local politics.

Joe Sherlock was elected to the Dáil again in 1987 and 1989. But he lost his seat once more in the 1992 general election.

Becoming a Senator

After losing his Dáil seat in 1992, Joe Sherlock joined a new political party called Democratic Left. In 1993, he was elected to Seanad Éireann, the upper house of the Irish parliament. He served as a Senator until 1997.

He tried to get back into the Dáil in the 1997 general election but was not successful. However, after ten years, he finally regained his Dáil seat in the 2002 general election.

Later Life and Legacy

In July 2005, Joe Sherlock announced that he would not run for election again. He decided to retire from politics. His son, Seán Sherlock, followed in his footsteps. Seán was already a member of the Cork County Council and Mallow Town Council.

Seán Sherlock was elected as a TD in the 2007 general election. He took over his father's seat in the Dáil. Joe Sherlock passed away on September 10, 2007, after a short illness. He left behind a legacy of public service in Ireland.
