Raymond Shane Dye is a famous former jockey from New Zealand. He was born on September 26, 1966, in a town called Matamata. A jockey is a person who rides horses in horse races.
Shane Dye started learning to be a jockey with Dave O’Sullivan in Matamata. Later, he moved to Sydney, Australia. There, he worked with Vic Thompson. Shane Dye had a very successful career as a jockey. He won many important races.
He won the famous Melbourne Cup race in 1989 with a horse named Tawriffic. He also won the Golden Slipper race four times in a row, from 1989 to 1992. In 1995, he won the Cox Plate with a horse called Octagonal.
Shane Dye was the top jockey in Sydney twice, in the 1990-91 and 1996-97 seasons. He won over 2,000 races in his career! He also rode horses in Mauritius and Hong Kong.
Shane Dye won 93 Group 1 races. These are the most important and highest-level races in horse racing. He stopped riding in races in 2013. On March 9, 2014, he was honored by being added to the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. This means he is recognized as one of the best jockeys ever in Australia.
