Raymond Shane Dye (born 26 September 1966) is a famous former jockey from Matamata, New Zealand. A jockey is a person who rides horses in horse races.
Shane Dye started his career as a young apprentice jockey in New Zealand. Later, he moved to Sydney, Australia, where he became very successful. He is known for winning some of Australia's biggest horse races.
He won the Melbourne Cup in 1989 with a horse named Tawriffic. This was a very fast race, and they set a new record time! Shane also won the Golden Slipper Stakes four times in a row, from 1989 to 1992. This race is for young, fast horses. In 1995, he won the W.S. Cox Plate riding a famous horse called Octagonal.
Shane Dye was a top jockey in Sydney, winning the Sydney Jockeys Premiership twice in the 1990s. He rode more than 2,000 winners in his career, which is a huge achievement! He also rode in races in Hong Kong and Mauritius.
Shane Dye won 93 Group 1 races during his career. Group 1 races are the highest level of horse racing, like the championships of the sport. He stopped riding in competitive races in 2013 and has said he will not return. In 2014, he was honored by being added to the Australian Racing Hall of Fame, which is a special place for the best people in horse racing history. He is also in the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame.
