The year 1637 was a time of big changes and important events around the world. From the collapse of a famous "tulip craze" in Europe to a rebellion in Japan, and new discoveries in math and science, this year was full of moments that shaped history. It also saw the opening of the very first opera house and the founding of a new town in the Americas by a woman.
Big Events of 1637
- February 3 – The exciting "Tulip mania" ended in the Dutch Republic (which is now the Netherlands). The government ordered it to stop because prices for tulip bulbs had become incredibly high, like a bubble that finally burst.
- February 15 – Ferdinand III became the new Holy Roman Emperor. This was a very powerful position in Europe at the time, leading a large empire.
- December 17 – The Shimabara Rebellion began in Japan. This was a major uprising, mainly by peasants who were also Christians, against the local lord.
- The famous mathematician Pierre de Fermat wrote a note claiming he had found a proof for what is now known as Fermat's Last Theorem. This math problem would puzzle mathematicians for centuries!
- France sent a few missionaries to the Côte d'Ivoire in West Africa. France would later take control of this country more than 200 years later.
- England started a war against the Mashantucket Pequots, a Native American tribe. This conflict was part of the early history of English settlements in North America.
- The very first public opera house, called Teatro San Cassiona, opened its doors in Venice, Italy. This was a big step for music and theater.
- The famous thinker René Descartes published his important book, Discours de la Methode (which means "Discourse on the Method"). In this book, he wrote about his ideas on philosophy and science, including his famous phrase, "I think, therefore I am."
- Elizabeth Poole made history by becoming the first woman to found a town in the Americas. She founded Taunton, Massachusetts.
