New Ideas and Services
- February 22 – The Académie française was officially started in Paris, France. This special group was created to protect and improve the French language. - July 31 – King Charles I of England made the Royal Mail service available for everyone to use. Before this, the mail service was mostly for the King and his government. Now, ordinary people could send letters and packages, which made it much easier for people to communicate across the country. This was a big step for how people shared news and did business!
Nature's Power
- August 25 – A very powerful storm, known as the Great Colonial Hurricane, hit Narragansett Bay. This area is in what is now the northeastern part of the United States. This hurricane was likely as strong as a Category 3 storm, which means it had very strong winds and caused a lot of damage. Sadly, over 46 people lost their lives because of this storm.
Other Important Events
- Dominica is claimed by France. This means that France officially announced that they owned the island of Dominica, which is in the Caribbean Sea. This was part of a larger period when European countries were exploring and claiming lands around the world.
