Ganegoda Appuhamelage Don Edmund Ananda Seneviratne (born April 20, 1927 – died September 26, 2015) was an important police officer and diplomat from Sri Lanka. He served as the top police chief, known as the Inspector-General of Police. Later, he became Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to Malaysia. He also advised the Minister of National Security and was a member of the Public Service Commission of Sri Lanka.

Growing Up and School

Ana Seneviratne was born in Gampaha District, Sri Lanka. His parents were Irwin and Irene Seneviratne. He had three brothers. His oldest brother, Tissa, was an engineer. His younger brother, Nalin Seneviratne, became the Commander of the Sri Lankan Army. Another brother, Gamini, was a diplomat who served as an ambassador.

Ana Seneviratne went to Royal College, Colombo from 1938 to 1946. After that, he studied at the University of Ceylon, Colombo. This university is now known as the University of Colombo. He earned a law degree there.

His Time as a Police Officer

After finishing university, Seneviratne joined the Ceylon Police Force in 1951. He started as a trainee Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). As an ASP, he worked in different parts of Sri Lanka. Some of these areas included Matugama, Tangalle, and Kegalle.

In 1966, Seneviratne was an ASP in the CID. He was put in charge of investigating a murder case. Later, he was the Superintendent of Police (SP) for the Kegalle District. This was during a time of unrest in 1971, known as the 1971 JVP Insurrection. In 1972, he was part of an investigation by a special commission.

He also led police work in several provinces. These included Sabaragamuwa Province, Western Province, and Central Province. He also worked for the CID's Special Branch. After these roles, he became the SP in charge of the Police Headquarters.

In February 1972, Ana Seneviratne was promoted. He became a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG). He was then in charge of the Northern police area. This area covered the Jaffna Division, extending to the North Central Province and Eastern Province. In 1978, he was appointed as the top police officer. He became the Inspector General (IGP) of Police. He held this important position until 1982.

His Diplomatic Role

After his police career, Ana Seneviratne took on a new role. President J.R. Jayawardene appointed him as Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to Malaysia. He served in this role from 1982 until July 1985. During his time in Malaysia, he worked to boost tourism. He also helped make the relationship between Sri Lanka and Malaysia stronger.

His Family

Ana Seneviratne married Krishnajina Weeratunga. Her father, Arthur Weeratunga, was a planter. They had two children, named Charith and Aruni. His brother-in-law was General Tissa Weeratunga. General Weeratunga was also a Commander of the Sri Lankan Army.
