About the Eastern Province
Provinces are the main administrative divisions of Sri Lanka. They were first created in the 1800s. Later, in 1987, Provincial Councils were set up. These councils help manage the different areas.
Between 1988 and 2006, the Eastern Province was joined with the Northern Province. Together, they formed the North Eastern Province for a while.
Size and Population
The Eastern Province covers an area of 9,996 square kilometers (about 3,859 square miles). It is the second largest province in Sri Lanka.
According to the 2012 census, about 1.55 million people live here. This makes it the sixth most populated province in the country.
Districts of the Province
The Eastern Province is divided into three main districts:
Trincomalee is the capital city of the province. However, Kalmunai is the largest city in terms of population.
Government and Leadership
The province is governed by the Eastern Provincial Council. This council makes decisions for the region. The head of the province is called the Governor. There is also a Chief Minister who leads the provincial government.
The official languages spoken in the Eastern Province are Tamil and Sinhala.
Geography and Surroundings
The Eastern Province is bordered by the Indian Ocean to its east. This means it has a long coastline with many beaches.
To the north, it shares a border with the Northern Province. To the south, it is next to the Southern Province. The Uva Province and North Central Province are to its west.
