Malik Benjamin "Shake" Milton (born September 26, 1996) is an American professional basketball player. He currently plays for the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Before joining the NBA, Shake played college basketball for Southern Methodist University (SMU). He was picked in the 2018 NBA draft by the Dallas Mavericks. On the same night, he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. Shake has also played for several other NBA teams. These include the Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, and the Brooklyn Nets.

Shake Milton's High School Basketball Journey

Shake Milton played basketball at Owasso High School in Owasso, Oklahoma. His coach was Mark Vancuren. Shake was named Gatorade Player of the Year for Oklahoma twice. This happened in the 2013–14 and 2014–15 seasons.

During his senior year (2014–15), he was amazing. He scored about 29.7 points per game. He also made 4.4 assists per game. Because of his great performance, he received many awards. He was named Tulsa World Player of the Year. He also became Oklahoma Super 5 Player of the Year. The Oklahoma Coaches Association named him ALL-STATE. After high school, Shake chose to play for SMU. He had also considered playing for the University of Oklahoma and Indiana University.

Shake Milton's College Basketball Career

Shake Milton played college basketball for Southern Methodist University (SMU). He was a key player for the SMU Mustangs.

Freshman Year at SMU (2015-2016)

In his first year, Shake played in 30 games. He started in 23 of those games. He averaged 10.5 points per game. He also got 3.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. For his strong start, he was named to the AAC All-Rookie Team.

Sophomore and Junior Years (2016-2018)

In the summer of 2016, Shake joined the US Select Team. They went on a Goodwill Tour in Croatia.

During the 2016–17 season, he started all 35 games. He averaged 13.0 points, 4.5 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. He was named to the All-American Athletic Conference Second Team.

In the 2017–18 season, Shake played in 22 games. He averaged 18.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.4 steals. Sadly, his season ended early because of a broken right hand. Even with the injury, he was named to the All-AAC Second Team again.

Shake Milton's Professional Basketball Career

Shake Milton began his professional journey in the NBA.

Starting with the Philadelphia 76ers (2018–2023)

The Dallas Mavericks picked Shake Milton in the 2018 NBA draft. He was the 54th pick overall. Soon after, he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. This trade happened on the same night as the draft. The 76ers gave up the rights to two other players for him.

On July 26, Shake signed a special contract. It was a two-way contract. This meant he would play for both the 76ers and their minor league team. That team was the Delaware Blue Coats in the NBA G League.

Shake made his NBA debut on November 30, 2018. He played against the Washington Wizards. In that game, he scored five points and had two assists. As a rookie, he played in 20 games for the 76ers. He averaged 4.4 points per game. He also averaged 1.8 rebounds and 0.9 assists. On March 25, 2019, he scored a career-high 13 points against the Orlando Magic. For the Blue Coats, he averaged 24.9 points per game. This was the 4th best in the G-League. He also averaged 5.2 assists and 4.8 rebounds.

Before the 2019–20 season, Shake signed a four-year deal with Philadelphia. He got injured early in the season and missed some games. When he returned, he made his first career start on January 25, 2020. This was against the Los Angeles Lakers. He scored seven points and had nine rebounds. Later that month, he set new career highs. He had 6 assists and scored 27 points against the Atlanta Hawks. On March 1, 2020, Shake scored an amazing 39 points. This was against the Los Angeles Clippers. He also tied an NBA record. He made 13 three-pointers in a row over three games. That season, Shake started 24 games for the 76ers. He achieved career bests in many different stats.

Playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves (2023–2024)

On July 9, 2023, Shake Milton joined the Minnesota Timberwolves. On December 8, 2023, he scored 17 points. He also had 1 assist and 2 rebounds. This helped the Timberwolves win against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Time with the Detroit Pistons (2024)

On February 7, 2024, Shake was traded to the Detroit Pistons. He was traded along with Troy Brown Jr. and a future draft pick. This trade was for Monté Morris. On February 14, 2024, Shake scored 13 points. He also had 2 assists and 9 rebounds. This was in a game against the Phoenix Suns. On March 1, 2024, Shake and the Pistons agreed to end his contract.

Short Stint with the New York Knicks (2024)

On March 5, 2024, Shake Milton signed with the New York Knicks.

Joining the Brooklyn Nets (2024)

On July 6, 2024, Shake was part of a big trade to the Brooklyn Nets. He was traded with Bojan Bogdanović and Mamadi Diakite. The Nets also sent several draft picks. This trade was for Mikal Bridges and Keita Bates-Diop. On November 29, 2024, Shake scored 22 points. He also had two rebounds and four assists. This was in a game against the Orlando Magic. On December 26, 2024, he scored 20 points. Fourteen of those points came in just five minutes. This helped the Nets win against the Milwaukee Bucks. The next day, December 27, 2024, Shake started his first game of the season. He had 16 points and 10 assists. This was his last game as a Net.

Moving to the Los Angeles Lakers (2024–present)

On December 29, 2024, Shake Milton was traded again. He and Dorian Finney-Smith went to the Los Angeles Lakers. In return, the Nets received Maxwell Lewis, D'Angelo Russell, and three future draft picks.

Shake Milton's Personal Life

Shake Milton's father, Myrion Milton, also played college basketball. He played for the Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles and Texas A&M Aggies. Shake's nickname, "Shake," comes from his father's nickname, "Milk." People also call him "Sniper Shake." Shake was a freshman in high school when his father passed away.
