Dorian Finney-Smith is a professional basketball player from America. He was born on May 4, 1993. He plays for the Houston Rockets in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Before joining the Rockets, he played for the Dallas Mavericks, Brooklyn Nets, and Los Angeles Lakers. He also played college basketball for Virginia Tech and Florida.

High School Basketball Journey

Dorian Finney-Smith went to I. C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth, Virginia. During his junior year in 2009–10, he was a star player. He averaged almost 20 points and 13 rebounds per game. He also helped his team with assists, steals, and blocks.

In September 2010, Finney-Smith decided to play for Virginia Tech. He officially signed with them in December. In his senior year (2010–11), he continued to excel. He averaged 18 points and nearly 11 rebounds per game. He also blocked almost 4 shots per game.

Finney-Smith led his high school team to win two state championships in a row. He also helped them win regional and district titles. In his senior year's state championship game, he scored 19 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. He was named the VHSL Class AAA Player of the Year twice. He also earned many other honors, including All-State and All-Region.

College Basketball Career

Playing for Virginia Tech

As a freshman at Virginia Tech in 2011–12, Finney-Smith played in all 33 games. He started in 30 of those games. He averaged 6.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Because of his great play, he was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team. He scored his highest points that season, 17, in a close win against Boston College.

In June 2012, Finney-Smith decided to transfer to the University of Florida. He had to sit out the 2012–13 season. This was due to the rules for players who transfer between colleges.

Time with the Florida Gators

As a sophomore in 2013–14, Finney-Smith earned a special award. He was named the SEC Sixth Man of the Year. This award goes to a player who comes off the bench but makes a big impact. He was the second player from Florida to win this award.

He was the top rebounder for Florida that season. He grabbed 247 total rebounds, averaging 6.7 per game. He also had a fantastic game against Arkansas. He scored 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in an overtime win. He played in 37 games, averaging 8.7 points and 6.7 rebounds.

In his junior year (2014–15), Finney-Smith was named to the second-team All-SEC. He led Florida in scoring, averaging 13.1 points per game. He was also the team's best rebounder and three-point shooter. He scored a career-high 25 points in a game against Jacksonville. In that game, he made 5 of 7 three-point shots.

As a senior in 2015–16, Finney-Smith again made the second-team All-SEC. He was Florida's leading scorer for the second year in a row, with 14.7 points per game. He was also the top rebounder for the third straight season, averaging 8.3 rebounds. He became the first Florida player to score over 1,000 points after transferring to the school. His 1,220 points at Florida rank 36th in the school's history.

Professional Basketball Career

Starting with the Dallas Mavericks (2016–2023)

Dorian Finney-Smith was not chosen in the 2016 NBA draft. However, he signed with the Dallas Mavericks in July 2016. He joined the team for the NBA Summer League. He impressed the Mavericks during training camp and earned a spot on the team.

In his first season (2016–17), he played more minutes as the season went on. On November 6, he played 31 minutes against the Milwaukee Bucks. He helped the Mavericks win with 5 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals. Two days later, he started his first NBA game. He scored 5 points in a win against the Los Angeles Lakers. In December, he had some of his best games. He scored 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds against the Indiana Pacers. A few days later, he had 13 points and 9 rebounds against the Denver Nuggets.

After missing many games in the 2017–18 season due to a knee injury, Finney-Smith returned in March 2018. He scored 7 points in a win against the Memphis Grizzlies. On April 6, he had his season-high of 15 points and 10 rebounds against the Detroit Pistons. In November 2018, he scored a season-high 19 points against the New York Knicks.

Becoming a Starter and Contract Extension

In July 2019, Finney-Smith signed a new contract with the Mavericks. It was a 3-year deal worth $12 million. On November 18, he scored a career-high 22 points in a win against the San Antonio Spurs. In August 2020, he grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds against the Sacramento Kings. A few days later, he scored a career-high 27 points and made 6 three-pointers against the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Mavericks made it to the playoffs in 2020 for the first time since 2016. They played against the Los Angeles Clippers. Finney-Smith made his playoff debut on August 17. He scored 9 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in Game 1. The Mavericks were eventually eliminated by the Clippers in six games.

On April 5, 2021, Finney-Smith scored a season-high 23 points against the Utah Jazz. For the second year in a row, the Mavericks faced the Clippers in the playoffs. On May 22, Finney-Smith scored 18 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in Game 1. The Mavericks lost to the Clippers in seven games.

In February 2022, Finney-Smith signed a new four-year contract with the Mavericks. It was worth $52 million. He scored a career-high 28 points on March 30 in a win against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Mavericks beat the Utah Jazz in the first round of the playoffs. Then they faced the Phoenix Suns in the second round. On May 8, Finney-Smith scored a playoff career-high 24 points against the Suns. He made 8 three-pointers in that game. The Mavericks won that series in seven games. However, they were eliminated in the Western Conference Finals by the Golden State Warriors. In Game 4 of the Conference Finals, Finney-Smith scored 23 points.

Moving to the Brooklyn Nets (2023–2024)

On February 6, 2023, Finney-Smith was traded to the Brooklyn Nets. He moved to the Nets along with Spencer Dinwiddie. In return, the Mavericks received Kyrie Irving and Markieff Morris.

Playing for the Los Angeles Lakers (2024–2025)

On December 29, 2024, Finney-Smith was traded again. He moved from the Nets to the Los Angeles Lakers. Shake Milton also joined him in the trade. The Nets received Maxwell Lewis, D'Angelo Russell, and three future second-round picks.

On June 29, 2025, it was announced that Finney-Smith decided to leave his contract with the Lakers. This made him a free agent, meaning he could sign with any team.

Joining the Houston Rockets (2025–present)

On July 7, 2025, Finney-Smith signed a new contract with the Houston Rockets. It was a four-year deal worth $53 million.

About Dorian's Life

Dorian Finney-Smith's parents are Elbert Smith and Desiree Finney-Henderson. His grandmother, Doris, gave him the nickname "Doe-Doe."

Dorian has several siblings. His mother has five other children. Three of his siblings also played college sports. Ben Finney played basketball for the Old Dominion Monarchs. Sha-Kilya Finney played basketball for Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks. Monnazjea Finney-Smith played basketball for the VCU Rams.

Dorian Finney-Smith became a father to a daughter when he was 16 years old. He also has two sons.
