- January 1 – Many old books, movies, and songs from 1923 became free for everyone to use in the United States. This is called entering the public domain.
- Jair Bolsonaro started his four-year term as the new President of Brazil.
- The New Horizons space probe flew very close to a space rock called Arrokoth. This rock is in the Kuiper belt, a far-off area of our solar system.
- Qatar, a country in the Middle East, left OPEC. OPEC is a group of countries that work together to control oil prices.
- January 19 – A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 hit Coquimbo, Chile.
- February 1 — President of the United States Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would leave the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. This treaty was an agreement about nuclear weapons.
- February 12 — The Republic of Macedonia changed its name to North Macedonia. This happened so it could join NATO (a military alliance) and the European Union (a group of European countries).
