Berit Elisabet Andersson (born November 11, 1935 – died April 14, 2019), known as Bibi Andersson, was a famous Swedish actress. She was especially known for working many times with the well-known movie director Ingmar Bergman.

Early Life and Acting Career

Bibi Andersson was born in Kungsholmen, a part of Stockholm, Sweden. Her mother, Karin, worked to help people in the community, and her father, Josef, was a businessman.

Bibi first worked with director Ingmar Bergman in 1951. She was in an advertisement he directed for a cleaning product. As a teenager, she also worked as an extra in movies. An extra is someone who appears in the background of a film, often without speaking lines. She studied acting at two different drama schools before joining the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm.

During the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, Bibi starred in many movies and TV films directed by Bergman. In 1958, she won a special prize for Best Actress at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival. She shared this award with three other actresses for their work in Bergman's film Brink of Life. This movie was about women in a hospital's maternity ward.

Some of her other famous films with Bergman included The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, and Persona. In 1963, she also won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 13th Berlin International Film Festival for her role in The Mistress.

Later Career and Other Projects

Bibi Andersson's role as a nurse in the movie Persona (1966) was very powerful. In this film, her co-star, Liv Ullmann, played a character who mostly didn't speak. This meant Bibi had to deliver most of the movie's lines. For her amazing performance in Persona, she won the Guldbagge Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

After working with Bergman, Bibi also acted with other famous directors and actors. She appeared in the Western movie Duel at Diablo (1966) with James Garner and Sidney Poitier. She also worked with John Huston and Robert Altman. She even starred alongside Steve McQueen in a movie called An Enemy of the People (1977).

In 1973, Bibi started acting in American plays. Her most well-known American movie was I Never Promised You a Rose Garden (1977).

In the 1990s, Bibi Andersson also became a theatre director in Stockholm. She directed several plays at the Royal Dramatic Theatre. She spent a lot of her later career acting in TV shows and plays. She also helped with a humanitarian project called "Road to Sarajevo," which aimed to help people.

Personal Life

In 1996, Bibi Andersson wrote a book about her life called Ett ögonblick, which means "A Moment." She was married three times. Her first husband was director Kjell Grede, and they had a daughter together. Her second husband was politician and writer Per Ahlmark. Her third husband was Gabriel Mora Baeza.

In 2009, Bibi had a stroke, which is a serious health event that affects the brain. After this, she was hospitalized and faced challenges with speaking.

Bibi was the younger sister of another Swedish actress, Gerd Andersson. Bibi Andersson passed away on April 14, 2019, at the age of 83.
