Liv Johanne Ullmann, born on December 16, 1938, is a famous actress and filmmaker from Norway. Many people consider her one of the greatest European actresses ever. She is well-known for working often with the Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. They also dated for five years.
Liv Ullmann starred in many of Bergman's movies. These include Persona (1966), Cries and Whispers (1972), and Scenes from a Marriage (1973). She won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama in 1972 for her role in The Emigrants. She was nominated for four more Golden Globes.
In 2000, her movie Faithless, which she directed, was nominated for the Palme d'Or award. She also received two BAFTA Award nominations and two Academy Award for Best Actress nominations. On March 25, 2022, Liv Ullmann received an Honorary Academy Award. This award recognized her amazing acting and how she showed deep feelings in her roles.

Early Life and Family
Liv Johanne Ullmann was born in Tokyo, Japan, on December 16, 1938. Her parents, Janna and Erik Ullmann, were Norwegian. Her father was an aircraft engineer working in Tokyo. Liv's grandfather helped Jewish people escape during World War II. Because of this, he was sent to a concentration camp where he sadly passed away.
When Liv was two, her family moved to Toronto, Canada. Her father worked at a Norwegian Air Force base there during the war. Later, they moved to New York City in the U.S. Her father died four years later from head injuries. This loss affected Liv deeply. Her mother worked as a bookseller to raise Liv and her sister. Eventually, they moved back to Norway and lived in Trondheim.
Acting and Directing Career
Liv Ullmann started her acting journey on stage in Norway in the mid-1950s. She spent much of her career acting in plays. She became famous for playing Nora Helmer in Henrik Ibsen's play A Doll's House.
She became even more well-known when she started working with Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. She starred in 10 of his movies, earning much praise. Some of these films include Persona (1966) and Autumn Sonata (1978). In Autumn Sonata, she acted alongside Ingrid Bergman. Liv Ullmann often worked with Swedish actor Erland Josephson. They made the TV drama Scenes from a Marriage (1973), which was also made into a movie. She also acted with Laurence Olivier in A Bridge Too Far (1977).
Liv Ullmann has been nominated for over 40 awards. She won the best-actress prize three times from the National Society of Film Critics. She also won three times from the National Board of Review and three awards from the New York Film Critics Circle. In 1971, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for The Emigrants. She was nominated again in 1976 for Face to Face.
In 1975, Liv Ullmann made her Broadway debut in New York City, again in A Doll's House. She also appeared in plays like Anna Christie and Ghosts. She even starred in a musical version of I Remember Mama.
In 1982, Ingmar Bergman wanted Liv Ullmann to play a role in his last movie, Fanny and Alexander. He wrote the part especially for her. However, she felt the role was too sad and turned it down. She later said this was one of her few regrets.

In 1984, she was the head of the jury at the 34th Berlin International Film Festival. In 2001, she led the jury at the Cannes Film Festival. She introduced her daughter, Linn Ullmann, at Cannes, saying, "Here comes the woman whom Ingmar Bergman loves the most." Her daughter was there to accept an award for her father. Liv Ullmann has also written two autobiographies, Changing (1977) and Choices (1984).
Liv Ullmann's first movie as a director was Sofie (1992). Her friend and fellow actor, Erland Josephson, starred in it. She later directed Faithless (2000), which was based on a story by Bergman. Faithless was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 2003, Ullmann returned to her role from Scenes from a Marriage in Saraband (2003). This was Bergman's final TV movie. In 2004, she was offered a role in the American TV series ... and the City. She found the offer amusing but turned it down. Later that year, director Steven Soderbergh wrote a role just for her in the movie Ocean's 12, but she also declined.
In 2006, Liv Ullmann narrated The Danish Poet, an animated short film. This film won an Academy Award for Animated Short Film in 2007. In 2013, Ullmann directed a film version of Miss Julie. The movie, released in September 2014, starred Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, and Samantha Morton. It received great reviews in Norway.
In March 2022, Liv Ullmann received an Academy Honorary Award. Actor John Lithgow presented her with the award. He said that Bergman might not have been one of the greatest filmmakers without Liv Ullmann.
Honors and Causes
Liv Ullmann is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. She has traveled widely for the organization, helping children around the world. She also helped start the Women's Refugee Commission and is its honorary chair.
In 2005, King Harald V of Norway made Ullmann a Commander with Star of the Order of St. Olav. This is a high honor in Norway. In 2006, she received an honorary degree from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
Personal Life

Liv Ullmann was married to psychiatrist Hans Jakob Stang from 1960 to 1965. She was with Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman from 1965 to 1970. During this time, she became his main actress and worked with him often. They had a daughter, writer Linn Ullmann, born in 1966. Linn's son, Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, born in 1990, also became a filmmaker.
In 1985, Liv Ullmann married American real estate developer Donald Saunders. They divorced in 1995 but remained friends.
