The Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film is a super cool prize given out every year by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). You might know these awards better as the Oscars! This award celebrates the best short animated movies. It has been given out since the very early days of the Oscars, starting with films from 1931-1932.

The name of this award has changed a few times over the years. From 1932 to 1970, it was called "Short Subjects, Cartoons." Then, from 1971 to 1973, it was known as "Short Subjects, Animated Films." The name we use today, "Best Animated Short Film," started in 1974.

At first, the award went to the people who produced the short films. But now, the Oscar goes to the person who had the main idea and led the creative work for the film. If more than one person was super important in making the film, they can both get a statue!

For a long time, only American films were nominated. But in 1952, a Canadian film called The Romance of Transportation in Canada was nominated. Then, in 1961, a film from Croatia, Ersatz (The Substitute), became the first non-English animated short to win!

Many famous names have won this award. Walt Disney won the very first one for Flowers and Trees. He holds the record for the most nominations (39) and wins (12) in this category! The classic cartoon duo, Tom and Jerry, also did amazing, getting 13 nominations and winning 7 Oscars. The Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons from Warner Bros. were nominated 16 times and won 5 awards. Outside of the U.S., the National Film Board of Canada has won 7 Oscars. And Nick Park from Britain won three times, including for his Wallace & Gromit films.

What counts as a "short" film for the Oscars? It means the movie must be 40 minutes or less, including all the credits at the end. Before the final nominees are announced, a group of fifteen films is chosen as a "shortlist."

Exploring the Best Animated Short Films

A Look Back at Past Winners

Over the years, many amazing animated shorts have won this special award. In the early days, Walt Disney was a huge winner, taking home many Oscars for his cartoons like Three Little Pigs and The Old Mill. His films often featured beloved characters and groundbreaking animation.

Later, other studios also shined. MGM's famous Tom and Jerry cartoons won several times, making audiences laugh with their endless chase scenes. Warner Bros. also had success with their Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series, featuring characters like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.

The National Film Board of Canada became a strong contender, winning many awards for their unique and artistic films. In more recent times, animators like Nick Park from Aardman Animations won multiple times for his creative stop-motion films, including those starring Wallace & Gromit. Studios like Pixar also started winning awards for their innovative computer-animated shorts, such as Geri's Game and For the Birds. These films show how animation has grown and changed over the decades!
