What is a Live Action Short Film?
A "live action" film means it uses real people and real settings, not animation. A "short film" is a movie that is not very long. For this award, a short film must be 40 minutes or less. This includes all the credits at the end.
History of the Award
This award has been around for a long time, changing its name a few times. It started in 1932.
Early Days: Comedy and Novelty
From 1932 to 1935, there were two awards for short films. One was for "Comedy" shorts, and the other was for "Novelty" shorts. Novelty films were often unusual or experimental.
Reel Lengths and Color
From 1936 to 1956, the awards were based on how long the films were. A "reel" of film was about 11 minutes long. So, there were awards for "One-reel" films and "Two-reel" films. For a couple of years (1936 and 1937), there was even a special award for "Color" short films!
Modern Name and Rules
In 1957, all these different short film awards were combined into one. It was first called "Short Subjects, Live Action Subjects." Later, it became "Short Subjects, Live Action Films." Finally, in 1974, it got its current name: Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film.
The Academy Awards committee decides who wins. They give the award to the person most responsible for the film's idea and how it was made. Sometimes, if more than one person was very important in making the film, a second award can be given. Before the final nominees are announced, fifteen films are chosen for a special shortlist.
