Wesley Wales Anderson, born on May 1, 1969, is an American filmmaker. His movies are known for exploring themes like sadness, growing up, and families that don't quite fit together. Because his films are so unique, with their special look and storytelling, and often feature many famous actors, critics call him an "auteur." This means he has a very strong, recognizable style. Three of his films were even listed among the greatest movies since 2000 in a 2016 poll by BBC Culture.
Anderson became well-known for his early films, Bottle Rocket (1996) and Rushmore (1998). During this time, he often worked with brothers Luke Wilson and Owen Wilson. He also started his own production company, American Empirical Pictures. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay for The Royal Tenenbaums (2001).
His later films include The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) and The Darjeeling Limited (2007). He also made his first stop-motion animated film, Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), which earned him a nomination for Best Animated Feature. Then came Moonrise Kingdom (2012), for which he received another Best Original Screenplay nomination.
For his film The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), he was nominated for Best Director and Best Picture at the Academy Awards. He also received his third Best Original Screenplay nomination and won a BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay. His more recent works include his second stop-motion film, Isle of Dogs (2018), which won him the Silver Bear for Best Director. He also directed The French Dispatch (2021) and Asteroid City (2023). Anderson won an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023). His latest film, The Phoenician Scheme, was released in May 2025.

Early Life and School
Wesley Wales Anderson was born on May 1, 1969, in Houston, Texas. His father, Melver Leonard Anderson, worked in advertising, and his mother, Texas Anne Anderson, was a realtor and archaeologist. His parents divorced when he was eight years old. He is the middle of three brothers. His older brother, Mel, is a doctor, and his younger brother, Eric Chase Anderson, is a writer and artist. Eric's artwork has even appeared in some of Wes's films, like The Royal Tenenbaums.
Wes graduated from St. John's School in Houston in 1987. This school later became a key location in his film Rushmore. When he was a kid, Anderson used his father's Super 8 camera to make silent films starring his brothers and friends. Even though he loved making movies, his first dream was to be a writer.
While attending the University of Texas at Austin, Anderson worked part-time as a movie projectionist. There, in 1989, he met his roommate and future filmmaking partner, Owen Wilson. In 1991, Anderson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus on philosophy.
Film Career
1990s Films
Anderson's first film was Bottle Rocket (1996). It was based on a short film he made with Luke and Owen Wilson. This movie is a crime caper about young Texans who dream of pulling off big robberies. Critics liked it, but it didn't make much money at the box office.
His next film was Rushmore (1998). This was a unique comedy about a high school student who has a crush on an elementary school teacher. It starred Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, and Olivia Williams. The film was a big success with both critics and audiences. It also helped Bill Murray become a respected actor in independent movies. Murray went on to appear in many of Anderson's future films. In 1999, Anderson won the Best Director award at the Independent Spirit Awards for Rushmore. The film has since become a cult classic. In 2016, it was chosen to be kept safe in the United States National Film Registry because of its importance.
2000s Films
Anderson's next comedy-drama, The Royal Tenenbaums, came out in 2001. This film is about a talented, artistic family in New York City and their father, played by Gene Hackman, who has been away from them. It also stars Anjelica Huston as the ex-wife and Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, and Gwyneth Paltrow as their children. The movie was a hit with both critics and audiences. It was Anderson's most successful film financially until Moonrise Kingdom, earning over $50 million. The Royal Tenenbaums was nominated for an Academy Award.
Anderson's next movie was The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004). It's about a documentary filmmaker, played by Bill Murray, who is like the famous explorer Jacques Cousteau. The film also features Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Anjelica Huston, and Michael Gambon. While it's a great example of Anderson's unique style, critics didn't like it as much as his earlier films, and it didn't make as much money as The Royal Tenenbaums.

The Darjeeling Limited (2007) tells the story of three brothers who are not very close emotionally, traveling together on a train in India. This film had a more serious tone, similar to The Royal Tenenbaums, but it received some of the same criticisms as The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Anderson has said he filmed in India partly to honor Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray, whose "films have also inspired all my other movies." The movie stars Anderson's frequent actors Jason Schwartzman and Owen Wilson, along with Adrien Brody.
Anderson has also made several important short films. Besides the original Bottle Rocket short, he made Hotel Chevalier (2007), which takes place in Paris. This short film acts as an introduction to The Darjeeling Limited and stars Schwartzman with Natalie Portman. In 2009, Anderson's stop-motion-animated film Fantastic Mr. Fox, based on the Roald Dahl book, was released. It featured the voices of Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, George Clooney, and Meryl Streep. Critics loved it, and it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
2010s Films

In 2012, Anderson's film Moonrise Kingdom was released. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. This film is a coming-of-age comedy set in a made-up town in New England. It features a great cast including Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Frances McDormand, and Tilda Swinton. The film perfectly shows Anderson's unique style and earned him another Academy Award nomination for his screenplay. It was also a big financial success, making $68.3 million with a budget of only $16 million.
In 2014, Anderson's next film, The Grand Budapest Hotel, came out. It stars Ralph Fiennes, Tony Revolori, Saoirse Ronan, Jeff Goldblum, Willem Dafoe, and many of Anderson's regular actors like Bill Murray and Tilda Swinton. The movie is mostly set in the 1930s and follows the adventures of M. Gustave, the hotel's concierge. The New York Times said it made "a marvelous mockery of history." This film was one of Anderson's biggest hits with both critics and audiences, earning almost $175 million worldwide. It received nine Oscar nominations and won four, including for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. It also earned him his first nomination for Best Director.
Anderson returned to stop-motion animation with Isle of Dogs. Production began in the United Kingdom in October 2016, and the film was released in March–April 2018. The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score at the Academy Awards.
2020s Films
Anderson's film The French Dispatch is set in post-war France. It stars Benicio Del Toro, Jeffrey Wright, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Owen Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, and Timothée Chalamet. Its release was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It finally premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on July 12, 2021, and was released in the United States on October 22, 2021.
In November 2021, Anderson finished filming Asteroid City. Much of the film was shot in the Spanish city of Chinchón, where a huge set was built to look like Monument Valley. The film stars Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Jeff Goldblum, Hope Davis, and Jeffrey Wright. It premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and was released in the United States on June 16, 2023. The film received mostly positive reviews.
Anderson then directed an adaptation of Roald Dahl's short story collection The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More for Netflix. The 41-minute short film, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. It was highly praised by critics. It was released in U.S. theaters on September 20, 2023, and on Netflix on September 27, 2023. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ralph Fiennes, and Ben Kingsley. Anderson also released three other short films based on Roald Dahl's work on Netflix in September 2023: The Swan, The Rat Catcher, and Poison. At the 96th Academy Awards, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film, which was Wes Anderson's first Oscar win. The four short films were later combined into one movie called The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More, released on March 15, 2024.
Anderson's most recent film, The Phoenician Scheme, was released in the United States on May 30, 2025. It premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival earlier that month. The film stars Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Michael Cera, Bryan Cranston, and Mathieu Amalric. It received generally positive reviews and was nominated for a Palme d'Or.
Style and Directing Techniques
How His Films Look and Feel
Wes Anderson's films are known for their very specific look and feel. He often uses camera movements that make scenes look flat, like a picture. He also uses symmetrical shots, where everything is perfectly balanced. You might notice quick zooms and slow-motion walking scenes. His movies often have a limited color palette, meaning he uses only a few main colors. The sets and props often look handmade, sometimes even using miniatures.
These choices give his movies a unique quality that makes them feel like "self-contained worlds." Many people, including Anderson himself, have said his films feel like "scale-model households." This special style has led to a lot of discussion and even parodies.
Since The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Anderson has used more stop-motion animation and miniatures. He even made entire movies using stop motion, like Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isle of Dogs.
Music in His Films
Anderson often uses pop music from the 1960s and 1970s in his films' soundtracks. Usually, one band or musician's music is featured a lot in each movie. For example, Rushmore used a lot of Cat Stevens songs. The Royal Tenenbaums featured Nico. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou used David Bowie songs, including covers sung by Seu Jorge. The Darjeeling Limited and Rushmore featured the Kinks. Fantastic Mr. Fox used the Beach Boys. Moonrise Kingdom featured Hank Williams and the music of Benjamin Britten.
The Grand Budapest Hotel, which is mostly set in the 1930s, didn't use pop music. Instead, it featured music by Alexandre Desplat. This soundtrack won Desplat an Academy Award for Best Original Score. The music in Anderson's films often brings new attention to the artists, like with the song "These Days" from The Royal Tenenbaums.
Actors He Works With Often
Wes Anderson's films often feature the same actors. These include the Wilson brothers (Owen, Luke, and Andrew), Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Anjelica Huston, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Bob Balaban, Tony Revolori, and Tilda Swinton.
Robert Yeoman has been the director of photography for all of Anderson's live-action films. Mark Mothersbaugh composed the music for Anderson's first four films, and Alexandre Desplat has composed the music for the next six, starting with Fantastic Mr. Fox. Randall Poster has been the music supervisor for all of Anderson's films since Rushmore. Anderson has also written films with Noah Baumbach, Roman Coppola, and Hugo Guinness.
Personal Life
Wes Anderson is in a relationship with Juman Malouf, a writer, costume designer, and voice actress from Lebanon. Her mother is the novelist Hanan al-Shaykh. Wes and Juman had a daughter named Freya in 2016. Bill Murray is Freya's godfather.
Anderson has lived in an apartment in Paris since 2005, after spending most of his adult life in New York City. His brother is the author, illustrator, and actor Eric Chase Anderson.
