Early Life and Education

Isaac Liev Schreiber was born on October 4, 1967, in San Francisco, California. His mother, Heather Milgram, was a painter, and his father, Tell Schreiber, was an actor and carpenter. His mother is Jewish and his father was Protestant. His grandfather, Alex Milgram, came to the U.S. from Ukraine.

When Schreiber was a baby, his family moved to a rural area in British Columbia, Canada. After his parents separated when he was five, he and his mother moved to New York City. Schreiber has described his mother as an artistic and free-spirited person. She drove a taxi and made papier-mâché puppets for a living. For his 16th birthday, she bought him a motorcycle to encourage him to be fearless.

His mother's unique lifestyle had a big impact on him. She did not allow him to watch movies in color, so his favorite actors were from black-and-white films, like Charlie Chaplin. He later said that he appreciated how his mother raised him.

Schreiber attended Friends Seminary, a Quaker school in New York. He later went to Hampshire College in Massachusetts, where he started training as an actor. He earned a master's degree in drama from the prestigious Yale School of Drama in 1992. He also studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. At first, he wanted to be a screenwriter but decided to become an actor instead.
