Oscar Nominees and Winners
The movies and people nominated for the 97th Academy Awards were announced on January 23, 2025. Actress Rachel Sennott and actor Bowen Yang shared the news from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
The movie Emilia Pérez made history by getting 13 nominations. This is the most nominations ever for a non-English language film! Actress Karla Sofía Gascón from Emilia Pérez also made history as the first openly transgender performer to be nominated for an acting award.
Two non-English language films, Emilia Pérez and I'm Still Here, were nominated for both Best Picture and Best International Feature Film. This was the first time two films were nominated in both categories in the same year.
Timothée Chalamet, who played Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, became the youngest actor since James Dean in 1957 to be nominated twice for Best Actor. He was first nominated for Call Me By Your Name in 2018.
Yura Borisov became the first Russian actor to be nominated for an Oscar since 1978. Coralie Fargeat was the ninth woman ever nominated for Best Director for her film The Substance. I'm Still Here was the first Portuguese-language film to be nominated for Best Picture.
Flow was the second animated film to be nominated for both Best Animated Feature and Best International Feature Film. Also, Memoir of a Snail was only the second animated film with an R-rating to be nominated for Best Animated Feature.
This year, all the directors nominated for Best Director were first-time nominees in that category. Also, for the first time since 1978, all the movies with Best Actress nominees were also nominated for Best Picture.

Ceremony Details
Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan were the producers for the show for the second year in a row. Hamish Hamilton directed the telecast for the fifth time. They were chosen because of their love for movies and their experience with live TV.
In November, it was announced that comedian Conan O'Brien would host the event. There was talk about having multiple hosts, but Conan O'Brien took on the role himself. This year, the show changed how it presented acting awards. Instead of having five past winners talk about each nominee, they focused on celebrating the people who work behind the scenes in movies.
For the second year, Amelia Dimoldenberg was the social media ambassador and red carpet reporter. The ceremony was streamed live on Hulu and also on Disney+ for the first time.
Impact of Los Angeles Wildfires
The voting for Oscar nominations was delayed because of the Southern California wildfires. The nominations were announced later than planned. The wildfires also affected the ceremony itself. The Academy decided not to have the nominated songs performed live. Instead, the songwriters shared their thoughts and behind-the-scenes stories about their music. Some songwriters, like Diane Warren, felt this was "extremely disrespectful" because the songs are important to the movies.
Conan O'Brien talked about hosting the show during this difficult time. He said his team was working hard to make sure the show was thoughtful and respectful of what was happening in Los Angeles.
Hulu Streaming Issue
During the live show, the streaming service Hulu had some technical problems. It crashed a few times and even ended the live broadcast early, right before the Best Actress nominees were announced.

The "In Memoriam" part of the show remembered people from the film industry who had passed away. The Los Angeles Master Chorale performed "Lacrimosa" during this segment.
