What Happens in the Movie?
Two years after moving to San Francisco, Riley is now 13 years old. She is about to start high school. Her main emotions – Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust – have built a special part of her mind. This part is called the "Sense of Self." It holds memories and feelings that make up who Riley believes she is.
Joy wants to fill the Sense of Self only with happy memories. She even made a way to send any negative memories to the back of Riley's mind. Riley and her best friends, Bree and Grace, are invited to a weekend ice hockey camp. Riley hopes to join her school's team, the Firehawks.
New Emotions Arrive
The night before the camp, a "Puberty Alarm" goes off in Riley's mind. A group of mind workers rush into Headquarters to update the emotion console. The original emotions notice that Riley starts to react very strongly to everything they do.
Then, four new emotions arrive at Headquarters: Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui (which means boredom). At first, everyone is friendly. But soon, the old and new emotions disagree on how to handle things. Joy thinks Riley should focus on having fun at camp. Anxiety, however, wants Riley to win a spot on the team and make new friends. This is especially important because Riley learns that Bree and Grace will go to a different high school.
Trouble at Camp
While Joy is in charge, Riley accidentally causes the camp's strict director, Coach Roberts, to punish the other campers twice. Anxiety feels that Riley needs to change to fit in with the older players. So, Anxiety pushes Riley's original Sense of Self to the back of her mind. The old emotions are captured and thrown into a memory vault.
Anxiety and the other new emotions then use negative memories to create a new, less healthy Sense of Self. They encourage Riley to become friends with a popular hockey player named Val Ortiz. This starts to hurt Riley's friendships with Bree and Grace.
The Old Emotions Fight Back
The old emotions escape the vault and split up. Sadness uses a special tube to return to Headquarters. The others go to the back of Riley's mind to get her old Sense of Self back.
Sadness makes it back but can't stop Riley from sneaking into Coach Roberts' office. Riley reads the coach's notebook. She discovers that Coach Roberts doesn't think Riley is ready to be a Firehawk. Anxiety decides to take even more control over Riley.
The old emotions reach the back of Riley's mind. They find her Sense of Self on top of a mountain of bad memories. To get back quickly, they cause an avalanche of these bad memories. They ride the memories back to Headquarters. However, the memories spill into Riley's Sense of Self, making it even worse.
Riley's Panic Attack
Anxiety is shocked to see that her efforts have made Riley's Sense of Self turn into one of self-doubt. Anxiety frantically controls Riley during an important hockey game. Riley starts to hog the puck and misses most of her shots. She even accidentally hurts Grace, which sends her to the penalty box.
Horrified, a very stressed Anxiety takes over the control console. This causes an overwhelmed Riley to have a panic attack.
Finding Balance
The old emotions finally return to Headquarters. Joy convinces Anxiety that she doesn't need to force Riley to change for a better future. Anxiety agrees. Riley's original Sense of Self is put back, but her panic attack continues.
Anxiety admits she can't decide who Riley is. Joy then realizes the same is true for her. She removes the first Sense of Self again. This allows a new, more complex Sense of Self to form from both Riley's positive and negative memories. Together, all the emotions embrace this new Sense of Self. This helps Riley calm down and make up with Bree and Grace.
For the first time, Riley is in full control of her emotions. She asks Joy to take command and finishes the game with a smile. Later, Riley attends high school. She becomes friends with Val and the other Firehawks. She also stays true to herself and keeps her friendships with Bree and Grace. The first and second groups of emotions now work together peacefully. They protect Riley's ever-changing Sense of Self.

How the Movie Was Made
Developing the Story
After the first Inside Out movie was a big hit, people wondered if there would be a sequel. The director of the first film, Pete Docter, started thinking about ideas for a second movie in 2016. The actual story development for Inside Out 2 began in early 2020.
Pixar officially announced the sequel in September 2022. Kelsey Mann was chosen to direct the movie, and Mark Nielsen became the producer. Meg LeFauve, who helped write the first film, returned to write the screenplay.
Kelsey Mann wanted the new movie to feel "truthful." He used an idea from Pete Docter about having many more emotions in the mind. Mann first thought of adding nine new emotions to make Joy feel overwhelmed. But he realized that was too many for the story. So, he decided to use fewer new emotions. Some emotions that were considered but not used, like Jealousy and Guilt, still influenced the story. For example, parts of Guilt's feelings were given to Anxiety.
Research and Writing the Script
The people making the movie often talked to a psychologist named Lisa Damour. They used her books to make sure they showed how teenagers' emotions change during puberty in a correct way. Another psychology professor, Dacher Keltner, who helped with the first Inside Out, also gave advice. He helped decide which new emotions should be in the story.
To make sure the movie felt real for modern teens, Pixar asked a group of nine teenagers for their ideas. This group was called "Riley's Crew." Their feedback helped include the emotion Nostalgia. They also influenced scenes about everyday life for the emotions and the move from middle school to high school.
The director and producer were also inspired by their own daughters. Since they worked on the story during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, they could watch their own children, who were around Riley's age. This helped them create the characters and shape the film.
Originally, the movie's plot was going to involve a talent show. But after some early screenings, the team decided it would be better to focus on Riley playing hockey. They felt this was a unique part of her character.
Choosing the Voices
Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, and Lewis Black returned to voice Joy, Sadness, and Anger. For the roles of Fear and Disgust, new actors were brought in. Tony Hale now voices Fear, and Liza Lapira voices Disgust.
Maya Hawke joined the cast as Anxiety, a brand new emotion. The director, Kelsey Mann, said he was moved to tears by her audition. In January 2024, it was announced that June Squibb would voice Nostalgia.
Later, more new cast members were revealed. Ayo Edebiri voices Envy, Adèle Exarchopoulos voices Ennui, and Paul Walter Hauser voices Embarrassment. Kensington Tallman took over the role of Riley Andersen. Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan returned to voice Riley's parents.
The Music of the Film
Andrea Datzman composed the music for Inside Out 2. She is the first woman to create the score for a Pixar feature film. The movie's soundtrack album was released on June 14, 2024, the same day the film came out.
