Phyllis Smith (born August 15, 1949) is an American actress. She is also a casting associate, which means she helps choose actors for roles. She is best known for playing Phyllis Vance in the TV show The Office. She also voiced the character Sadness in the popular Pixar's animated movies Inside Out and Inside Out 2. She also starred as Betty Broderick-Allen in the Netflix series The OA.
Early Life and Education
Phyllis Smith was born on August 15, 1949, in St. Louis, Missouri. She went to Cleveland High School.
In 1972, Smith graduated from the University of Missouri–St. Louis. She earned a degree in elementary education. In the 1970s and 1980s, she was a dancer. She was also a cheerleader for the St. Louis Cardinals football team. She also worked as a performer. She had to stop dancing after she hurt her knee. Later, she worked in Hollywood, California as an actress and helped with casting.

Phyllis Smith was working as a casting associate for the TV show The Office. The show's creators offered her a special role. They created the character Phyllis Lapin just for her. Phyllis Lapin was a quiet saleswoman who often disagreed with the boss, Michael Scott.
Smith won awards for her acting in The Office. She received Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2006 and 2007. These awards were for "Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series." This means the whole cast worked well together. In 2008, she appeared on Celebrity Family Feud with her castmates from The Office.
In 2011, she played a supporting role in the movie Bad Teacher. In 2015, she voiced the character Sadness in the Pixar movie Inside Out. People really loved her performance as Sadness. Later, she became a regular cast member in the Netflix series The OA. In 2023, Smith appeared in an advertisement for Honey Nut Cheerios. She was with her The Office co-star and friend, Leslie David Baker. She voiced Sadness again in Inside Out 2 in 2024.
