The Inside Out series is a fun media franchise created by Pete Docter and Ronnie del Carmen. It takes you on an adventure inside the mind of a young girl named Riley. In her mind, different emotions are like little characters who help manage her thoughts and actions.
This amazing series is made by Pixar Animation Studios and shared by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It all started with the movie Inside Out in 2015, and a sequel, Inside Out 2, came out in 2024. The franchise also includes a short film, several video games, and even some cool theme park rides!

The Inside Out Movies
The Inside Out series has two main movies that explore Riley's mind and her feelings.
The First Film: Inside Out (2015)
The first movie, Inside Out, shows what happens inside Riley's mind. She's a young girl who has to move to a new city with her family. Five main emotions—Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust—work together (and sometimes against each other!) to help her deal with all the changes.
Director Pete Docter got the idea for Inside Out in 2009. He noticed how his own daughter's personality changed as she grew up. He asked Ronnie del Carmen, who had worked on other Pixar films like Finding Nemo and Up, to help direct. They looked at their own lives and talked to psychologists and brain scientists to make the movie's portrayal of the mind as accurate as possible. The movie first showed at a film festival in May 2015 and was released in the United States on June 19, 2015.
The Second Film: Inside Out 2 (2024)
Inside Out 2 continues Riley's story as she becomes a teenager. With new challenges, a whole new group of emotions shows up in her mind!
The idea for Inside Out 2 was announced in 2022. The new director, Kelsey Mann, used some ideas that Pete Docter had for the first movie, like having more emotions. The film was released in the United States on June 14, 2024.
Short Film Fun
Besides the main movies, there's also a short film that gives us another peek into Riley's world.
Riley's First Date? (2015)
This short film, Riley's First Date?, came out on November 3, 2015, with the first movie's Blu-ray release. Josh Cooley directed and wrote it.
The story happens after the first Inside Out movie. Riley's parents and their own emotions start to wonder if Riley is going on a date with a boy named Jordan. It's funny to see how their emotions react!

A new TV series based on Inside Out is being made for Disney+. It's called Dream Productions and is expected to come out in 2025. It will explore more of Riley's mind!
