June Louise Squibb (born November 6, 1929) is an American actress. She has had a long and exciting career in movies, TV shows, and plays. She started on Broadway, which is a famous theater district in New York City, in a musical called Gypsy in 1959. Her first movie role was in Alice in 1990.
June Squibb became very well-known for her role in the movie Nebraska (2013). For this role, she was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, which is one of the biggest awards in movies! More recently, she starred in her first main role in the action-comedy film Thelma (2024). She has also lent her voice to fun animated movies like Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018), Toy Story 4 (2019), Soul (2020), and Inside Out 2 (2024). On TV, you might have seen her in shows like Ghost Whisperer, Shameless, and Good Girls.

June Squibb was born in Vandalia, Illinois, on November 6, 1929. Her mother, JoyBelle, played the piano for silent films, and her father, Lewis, worked in insurance. June has a son named Harry, who is a filmmaker. When asked about older actors in Hollywood, she once said that "rules are meant to be broken," showing her positive and determined spirit!
Her Acting Journey
Starting Out
June Squibb began her acting journey at places like The Muny and HB Studio. In 1951, she moved to Cleveland to perform in plays and musicals at the Cleveland Play House. She acted in many different shows there. In the late 1950s, she moved to New York City to pursue a career on Broadway.
She made her Broadway debut in the original production of Gypsy: A Musical Fable. She also appeared in another Broadway musical called The Happy Time in 1968. Besides acting, she also did modeling and performed on road tours and cruise ships. She even worked as Santa Claus's helper during Christmas!
In 1985, June got her SAG/AFTRA card, which means she officially joined the actors' union, after appearing in a TV show called CBS Schoolbreak Special. Five years later, she made her first big movie appearance in the romantic comedy Alice, directed by Woody Allen. In the 1990s, she also had roles in movies like Scent of a Woman (1992) and Meet Joe Black (1998). On TV, she appeared in shows such as Law & Order, ER, and Two and a Half Men.
In 2002, June Squibb acted alongside Jack Nicholson in the movie About Schmidt, where she played his wife. After that, she appeared in films like Far from Heaven (2002) and Welcome to Mooseport (2004). From 2005 to 2007, she had a recurring role in the TV series Ghost Whisperer. She also guest-starred on shows like The Middle and Castle.
Becoming a Star
In 2013, June Squibb had a major role in the movie Nebraska, directed by Alexander Payne. She played opposite Bruce Dern and received amazing reviews for her performance. Critics called her a "scene-stealer" and "priceless."
For her role in Nebraska, June was nominated for many important awards, including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture. She also won the Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress and the Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture. In 2015, June Squibb starred in the comedy-drama film I'll See You in My Dreams. Later that year, she was in the Christmas movie Love the Coopers. In 2016, she played Sheldon's grandmother, Meemaw, on The Big Bang Theory. She also had a recurring role in the TV series Shameless. June continued to appear in many films, including Palm Springs (2020) and Hubie Halloween (2020). She also played Vivian, the grandmother of Eddie Palmer (Justin Timberlake), in the 2021 film Palmer.
In 2024, June Squibb took on her first main role in the action-comedy film Thelma. Critics loved her performance, with one reviewer saying she "proves she's still on top of her acting game." She also appeared in Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead and is set to star in another main role in Eleanor the Great.
