Mark Richard Hamill (born September 25, 1951) is a famous American actor. He is best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the amazing Star Wars movies. He also uses his voice to bring many characters to life. One of his most famous voice roles is the Joker in many DC Comics cartoons and video games, starting with Batman: The Animated Series in 1992.
Mark Hamill has had a long and exciting career. Besides Star Wars, he has acted in many other films and TV shows. He also became a successful stage actor on Broadway. His talent for voice acting has made him a legend in the world of animated characters and video games.

Early Life and Growing Up
Mark Richard Hamill was born on September 25, 1951, in Oakland, California. His dad, William Thomas Hamill, was a captain in the U.S. Navy. Because of his father's job, Mark and his six brothers and sisters moved around a lot. This meant he went to many different schools.
Mark loved movies and comic books when he was a kid. He studied drama at Nile C. Kinnick High School in Japan, where his family lived for a while. After high school, he went to Los Angeles City College to study acting even more.

Starting Out in Show Business
Mark Hamill began his acting career in the early 1970s. He had a regular role on the TV show General Hospital. He also starred in a short TV comedy called The Texas Wheelers. You might have seen him in guest roles on other popular shows like The Partridge Family and The Bill Cosby Show.
Becoming Luke Skywalker in Star Wars
Mark Hamill's life changed forever when he was chosen to play Luke Skywalker. This was for George Lucas's movie Star Wars. His friend, actor Robert Englund, even suggested he audition for the role. Mark thought he was just playing a sidekick at first.
The Original Star Wars Adventures (1977–1983)
Star Wars came out in May 1977 and was a huge hit! It became one of the most famous movies ever. Mark then starred in the sequels, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Between the first two films, Mark was in a car accident. He recovered and continued his amazing work. For his roles in the sequels, he won the Saturn Award for Best Actor. He even appeared on The Muppet Show as himself and Luke Skywalker!
Mark also lent his voice to radio versions of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. He appeared in documentaries about the making of these classic films.
Returning to the Star Wars Galaxy (2014–2025)
In 2014, Mark Hamill returned to the Star Wars universe. He voiced the ancient Sith Lord Darth Bane in the animated series The Clone Wars. He even received an award nomination for this role.
Later, he reprised his iconic role as Luke Skywalker in new Star Wars movies. He appeared in The Force Awakens (2015), Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). He had some different ideas about Luke's character in The Last Jedi, but he later praised the film.

Other Exciting Roles
After Star Wars, Mark wanted to show he could play many different characters. He acted in films like Corvette Summer (1978) and the war movie The Big Red One (1980). He also became a successful stage actor on Broadway. He starred in plays such as The Elephant Man and Amadeus. He even tried out for the movie version of Amadeus, but the director felt audiences would only see him as Luke Skywalker.
Mark continued acting in films throughout the 1990s. He also made guest appearances on TV shows like The Flash, where he played the villainous Trickster. He even appeared on Saturday Night Live as himself!

He has also helped raise money for Ukraine by signing Star Wars posters. In 2024, it was announced that Mark would voice The Flying Dutchman in The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants.
The Iconic Voice of The Joker
One of Mark Hamill's most famous voice roles is Batman's archenemy, the Joker. He first played the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series in 1992. He continued to voice the character in many other cartoons, like Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League. He also voiced the Joker in animated movies like Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.
Mark has also voiced the Joker in several Batman video games, including Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. He has won awards for his amazing performance as the Joker.
In January 2023, Mark shared that he felt it would be difficult to voice the Joker without his co-star Kevin Conroy, who voiced Batman and sadly passed away in 2022. However, Mark did voice the Joker in the fighting game MultiVersus and the film Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths in 2024.

Family Life
On December 17, 1978, Mark Hamill married Marilou York, who was a dental hygienist. They have three children: Nathan Elias, Griffin Tobias, and Chelsea Elizabeth. Their children have even made small appearances in Star Wars movies and The Flash TV series! Mark also has a granddaughter named Autumn.
Supporting Important Causes
Mark Hamill is a strong supporter of the Democratic Party. He has encouraged people to vote and supported candidates like Barack Obama and Kamala Harris. He even used his Joker voice to read some of Donald Trump's social media posts, which many found entertaining.
Mark has shown great support for Ukraine in its defense against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He called it a "fairy tale about good versus evil". He also lent his voice to the Air Alert app, which warns people about air attacks in Ukraine. In October 2023, Mark, along with many other Hollywood professionals, signed a letter condemning the Palestinian militant group Hamas. The letter asked for the release of hostages and expressed support for Israel. In April 2024, he also stated his support for Gaza and Palestine, while still condemning Hamas.
