Jeannie is an animated TV show from the United States. It aired on CBS from September to December 1973. The show had 16 episodes in total.
It was made by Hanna-Barbera and Screen Gems. William Hanna and Joseph Barbera were the main producers. Jeannie is a spin-off of the live-action show I Dream of Jeannie. However, this cartoon version is quite different.
In this cartoon, a high school student named Corey Anders finds Jeannie. Jeannie is a magical genie, and she has a genie-in-training friend named Babu. They become companions to Corey. The show was made for a younger audience than the original I Dream of Jeannie.
None of the actors from the original I Dream of Jeannie show came back to voice the characters. This was likely because of a small budget. Julie McWhirter voiced Jeannie instead of Barbara Eden. Mark Hamill (who later played Luke Skywalker in Star Wars) voiced Corey. This was his first voice-acting job! He also sang the show's theme song. Joe Besser voiced Babu.
Jeannie was part of CBS's Saturday-morning cartoon lineup. It also appeared on the show Fred Flintstone and Friends. Sometimes, characters from Jeannie even crossed over with the Scooby-Doo cartoons.
Story and Characters
In the Jeannie cartoon, a high school student named Corey Anders finds Jeannie's bottle while surfing. When he opens it, Jeannie and her young apprentice, Babu, appear. Corey becomes their master.
Jeannie is shown as a 16-year-old genie. She is training Babu, who is a "junior genie". Babu often causes funny problems because he is new to magic. He is the comic relief of the show, meaning he makes people laugh. He often pops up at the wrong times!
Jeannie and Babu become close friends and protectors to Corey. Jeannie also has a crush on Corey. The episodes usually show Corey trying to keep Jeannie and Babu's magic a secret. This is hard while he attends Center City High School. Jeannie also has trouble getting used to life in the 1970s.
Corey's friend, Henry Glopp, is the only other person who knows Jeannie is a genie. Other characters include Corey's mom (Mrs. Anders), a nosy student named S. Melvin Farthinggale, the powerful Master of all Genies (Hadji), and Debbie. S. Melvin is a "snobbish snoop" who often tries to find out what Jeannie and Babu are up to.
