The Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is a special prize given to movies. It celebrates the best work in making actors look different or amazing. This includes their makeup and their hair. It's one of the many Academy Awards (also known as the Oscars).

Usually, three films are chosen for this award each year. But sometimes there have been only two, or even four or five. Since the 92nd Academy Awards, five films are nominated.

How the Award Started

This award began in 1981. It was first called the Academy Award for Best Makeup. People felt that the amazing makeup in the movie The Elephant Man (1980) should have been recognized. Even though The Elephant Man didn't get an award, a new category was created. Before this, makeup artists could only get special, one-time awards for their work.

Choosing the Nominees

Before the final nominees are announced, a smaller list of films is picked. This is done by a special group of makeup artists. They watch clips from these films. This event is sometimes called a "bake-off." At first, only two films were shortlisted in 2002. After that, rules changed. Now, seven films must be chosen for the shortlist. The top three from these seven become the official nominees. Since 2020, the shortlist has grown to ten films.

In 2012, the award's name changed to its current title. It became the "Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling." This change started with the 85th Academy Awards. A makeup artist named Rick Baker has won this award the most times. He has won 7 times and been nominated 11 times.

Special Awards Before 1981

Before 1981, makeup artists sometimes received special Oscars. These were given for their amazing work on specific movies.

  • 1964 – William J. Tuttle for 7 Faces of Dr. Lao
  • 1968 – John Chambers for Planet of the Apes

Including Hairstylists

Since 1993, hairstylists can also share this award. This happens if their hair work greatly helps how the characters look.
