Paul Tazewell (born September 15, 1964) is an American costume designer. He creates the clothes and outfits for characters in plays, movies, TV shows, and even dance performances. He started his career on Broadway after studying at New York University Tisch School of the Arts.
Paul Tazewell has won some of the biggest awards in entertainment. These include an Academy Award (also known as an Oscar), a British Academy Film Award (BAFTA), a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Tony Award. He first worked on Broadway as a costume designer for Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk in 1996. He later won a Tony Award for his amazing costume designs for the musical Hamilton in 2016.
He also designed costumes for the movie West Side Story (2021). For this work, he became the first African American male costume designer to be nominated for an Academy Award. He then won an Academy Award for his costumes in the movie Wicked (2024). He also won a Primetime Emmy Award for his work on The Wiz Live! (2016).
Early Life and Education
Paul Tazewell was born in Akron, Ohio. He went to the North Carolina School of the Arts and NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. These schools helped him learn all about costume design.
From 2003 to 2006, Tazewell was a special artist and professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He taught students about costume design there.
Designing for the Stage and Screen
Paul Tazewell has designed costumes for many different types of shows. He has worked on over a dozen Broadway plays and musicals. His first Broadway show was Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk in 1996.
He has created costumes for many popular musicals like The Color Purple, In the Heights, and Memphis. He also designed for plays like A Streetcar Named Desire and A Raisin in the Sun.
Beyond Broadway, Paul Tazewell has designed for ballet companies like the Boston Ballet. He has also worked for opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera.
