After college, Ruth Carter started her career by interning in costume departments for theaters. In 1986, she moved to Los Angeles, a big city for movies. There, she met director Spike Lee, who hired her to design costumes for his second film, School Daze (1988). This was the start of a long and successful partnership.

She continued to work on many of Spike Lee's films, including Do the Right Thing (1989), Jungle Fever (1991), and Malcolm X (1992). Her designs helped bring these important stories to life. Ruth also designed costumes for other famous directors, like Steven Spielberg for Amistad (1997) and John Singleton for films like Rosewood (1997).

Bringing Wakanda to Life

One of Ruth Carter's most famous projects was the superhero film Black Panther (2018), directed by Ryan Coogler. For this movie, she created costumes inspired by Afrofuturism, which blends African culture with science fiction. She looked at many traditional African clothes, especially those from the Maasai and Ndebele tribes.

To get ideas, she traveled to southern Africa. She even got permission to use traditional designs from Lesotho in the film's costumes.
