How He Got Started in Film

He studied film at New York University and earned his degree in 1998. Before finishing college, he took a break to gain experience by making industrial films and TV commercials. He also learned about digital editing at The New School in New York City.
His Filmmaking Journey
2000–2014: First Films and TV Work
Sean Baker's first full-length movie was Four Letter Words (2000). He wrote, directed, and edited this film, which was about young men in America. He also helped create the popular sitcom Greg the Bunny (2002–2006), which starred Seth Green. This show was based on short videos Sean had directed and written earlier. Later, in 2010, he helped create a spin-off show called Warren the Ape.
Making Movies on a Small Budget
In 2004, Sean made Take Out with his friend Shih-Ching Tsou. They co-wrote, co-directed, and co-produced this film on a very small budget of only $3000! The movie is about a Chinese immigrant who needs to earn money quickly. It was shown at many film festivals.

His third film, Prince of Broadway, came out in 2008. This movie tells the story of an immigrant from Ghana who sells fake goods in New York City and discovers he has a son. Sean did many jobs on this film, including directing, writing, and editing. He even paid for the movie's release and advertising himself. Both Take Out and Prince of Broadway were nominated for awards in 2008.
Next, Sean directed Starlet (2012), which he co-wrote. The film is about an unexpected friendship between a 21-year-old girl and an 85-year-old woman in California.

As of 2021, Sean was thinking about making a TV show based on his film Tangerine. He hopes this would help the career of trans actress Mya Taylor, who would play the main role. He has also said he would love to direct a Fast & Furious movie because he enjoys cars and crashes!
