Mya Taylor (born March 28, 1991) is an American actress and singer. She is famous for her role as Alexandra in the 2015 movie Tangerine. For this role, she won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female.
Early Life and Journey
Mya Taylor was born in Houston, Texas, on March 28, 1991. Her Christian grandparents raised her. When she was in school, she realized she was a girl, even though she was born in a boy's body. This is called being transgender.
In 2009, she told her grandparents about her identity. This was a difficult time for her family. Mya then moved to California in May 2009 to live with another relative. However, this relative also had trouble understanding her identity. Mya had to find a new place to live.
She started going to therapy. During her talks with her therapist, she decided to be true to herself. In January 2013, she openly shared that she was transgender. Since then, she has reconnected with her mother, who gave her the name Mya. She lived in an apartment with her future co-star from Tangerine, Kitana Kiki Rodriguez.
Acting Career
Mya Taylor is best known for playing Alexandra in Sean Baker's 2015 movie Tangerine. This movie was special because it was one of the first times openly transgender actresses were supported for major awards.
Mya won the Gotham Independent Film Award for Breakthrough Actor for her acting in Tangerine. This made her the first openly transgender actress to win a Gotham Award. She also won the San Francisco Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress. Plus, she received the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female for the movie. She was the first openly transgender actress to win an Independent Spirit Award.
In 2016, a big talent agency called ICM Partners signed Mya Taylor. This meant they would help her find new acting and producing jobs in movies and TV.
Mya played Marsha P. Johnson in a short film from 2016 called Happy Birthday, Marsha!. Marsha P. Johnson was an important activist for LGBTQ+ rights. Mya also appeared in another short film in 2016 called Diane from the Moon.
In December 2017, it was announced that Mya would be in a TV show called Dietland. This show started airing on June 4, 2018, on the AMC channel.
