Marsha P. Johnson (born Malcolm Michaels Jr. on August 24, 1945 – died July 6, 1992) was an American activist. She worked hard for equal rights for all people. Marsha was also one of the first members of the Gay Liberation Front (GLF).

Helping Others
In 1970, Marsha P. Johnson and her good friend Sylvia Rivera started a place called STAR House. This house was a safe shelter for young people who were experiencing homelessness.
Marsha was also involved in the art scene in New York City. From 1987, she became an activist for people with AIDS. She worked with a group called ACT UP to help those affected by the illness.

Many people have honored Marsha P. Johnson for her important work.
Special Recognitions
- In June 2019, Marsha P. Johnson was named one of the first fifty American "pioneers, trailblazers, and heroes." Her name was added to the National LGBTQ Wall of Honor. This special wall is inside the Stonewall National Monument (SNM) in New York City. The SNM is the first U.S. national monument created to celebrate equal rights for all people.
- On June 30, 2020, Google honored Marsha P. Johnson with a special picture on their homepage called a Google Doodle.
Monuments and Parks
- In August 2020, Marsha's hometown, Elizabeth, New Jersey, announced they would build a monument to her. Many people signed a petition asking for a statue of Marsha to be placed there.
- On August 24, 2020, which was Marsha's 75th birthday, a park in New York was renamed in her honor. It is now called Marsha P. Johnson State Park. This was the first New York state park named after a person who was open about their identity. Two years later, the governor announced a new gate would be built at the park to honor Marsha.
