BAFTA Award for Best Film
Presented by British Academy of Film and Television Arts
Location United Kingdom
Currently held by One Battle After Another (2025)

The BAFTA Award for Best Film is a very special prize given each year by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. It celebrates the most amazing movies from all over the world! This award is part of the bigger British Academy Film Awards ceremony.

The award started way back in 1947. For many years, until 1969, it was called the BAFTA Award for Best Film From Any Source. This meant that films from any country could be nominated. Even today, movies from anywhere can win this top prize. There are also other BAFTA awards, like one specifically for British films and another for films not in English. Sometimes, a movie is so good it gets nominated for more than one of these awards!

Over the years, the award has been given to different people involved in making the film. Sometimes it was just the movie itself, sometimes the director, sometimes the producer, and sometimes both the director and producer. Since 1998, the award usually goes to the producers of the film. There was even one time, in 1962, when two films shared the award because they were both so excellent: Ballad of a Soldier and The Hustler.

Exploring BAFTA's Best Film Winners

The BAFTA Award for Best Film has honored many incredible movies throughout history. Below, we'll look at some of the films that have won this prestigious award. The winning films and their creators are shown in bold with a gold background. The years listed are when the films were released, not when the awards ceremony took place (which is usually the next year).

Early Days: The 1940s and 1950s

In the very first awards, for films released in 1947, the winner was The Best Years of Our Lives, an American film directed by William Wyler. It told a powerful story about soldiers returning home after war.

A year later, in 1948, the British film Hamlet, directed by and starring Laurence Olivier, won. This showed that British films were also making a big impact. In 1949, the Italian film Bicycle Thieves (Ladri di biciclette), directed by Vittorio De Sica, took home the prize. This movie is famous for its realistic storytelling.

Moving into the 1950s, films like All About Eve (1950), a classic American drama, and La Ronde (1951) from France, were celebrated. In 1952, the British film The Sound Barrier, directed by David Lean, won. Later, in 1957, David Lean won again with the epic adventure The Bridge on the River Kwai, a film made by both British and American teams. These early winners show how diverse and exciting cinema was becoming.

Modern Classics: The 1960s to 1990s

The 1960s brought more memorable winners, such as The Apartment (1960) from the United States, a clever comedy-drama. In 1962, Lawrence of Arabia, another grand film directed by David Lean, won the award. This film is known for its stunning visuals and epic story.

Later, in 1968, the American film The Graduate, directed by Mike Nichols, was recognized. This movie captured the feelings of young people at the time. The 1990s saw films like Schindler's List (1993), a powerful American drama directed by Steven Spielberg, and the British romantic comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) win the top award. These films showed a wide range of stories and styles being celebrated.

Twenty-First Century Triumphs: 2000s to Today

As we entered the new century, exciting films continued to win. In 2000, the action-packed Gladiator, from the US and UK, won. The fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) from New Zealand and the US also took home the prize, followed by its final part, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003).

More recently, in 2018, the Mexican film Roma, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, won, showing that films from all corners of the globe are still being honored. In 2019, the British and American war film 1917, directed by Sam Mendes, was the winner.

The most recent winners include Nomadland (2020) from the United States, The Power of the Dog (2021) from Australia, New Zealand, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, and the German film All Quiet on the Western Front (2022). In 2023, the American film Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, won. For films released in 2024, the British and American film Conclave, directed by Edward Berger, was the winner. The award for films released in 2025 went to the American film One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.
