Lol Crawley was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. He grew up in Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain, Wales. He lived there with his parents and two older sisters. One of his sisters is the writer and historian Fay Bound Alberti.

He went to Ysgol Llanfyllin and Oswestry College. After that, he earned a BTEC National Diploma in Audio Visual Studies. This was at The North East Wales Institute. Later, he studied at Northumbria University, where he earned a BA Hons degree.
