Jacques Audiard (born April 30, 1952) is a famous French film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is known for making many award-winning movies. He has won an Academy Award, two British Academy Film Awards, and three Golden Globes. He also holds the record for the most wins at the César Awards, which are France's national film awards, with thirteen wins between 1995 and 2025. He has won three times for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay for the same movie. He also won four awards at the Cannes Film Festival.

Jacques Audiard started his career writing movie scripts in the 1970s. He directed his first film, See How They Fall, in 1994. After that, he directed A Self-Made Hero (1996) and Read My Lips (2001). His drama The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005) was a big success. It won him a BAFTA award and his first set of César awards for Best Film, Director, and Screenplay. He won these same three César awards again for his prison crime drama A Prophet (2009). A Prophet was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

In 2015, he directed Dheepan, which was mostly in the Tamil language. This film won the top prize at Cannes, the Palme d'Or. Later, he made his first movie in English, a western called The Sisters Brothers (2018). His first movie in Spanish was the musical Emilia Pérez (2024). This film won Golden Globes for Best Musical or Comedy and Best Foreign Language Film. For Emilia Pérez, Audiard also won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song "El Mal". The film was also nominated for three other Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Early Life and First Steps in Film

Jacques Audiard was born in Paris, France. His father, Michel Audiard, was also a film director and screenwriter. Jacques began writing screenplays in the 1980s. Some of the films he wrote scripts for include Réveillon chez Bob!, Mortelle randonnée, Baxter, Fréquence Meurtre, and Saxo.

A Look at His Film Career

In 1994, Jacques Audiard directed his first movie, See How They Fall. It was a road movie starring Mathieu Kassovitz and Jean-Louis Trintignant. This film won the César Award for best first film. Two years later, he worked again with Kassovitz and Trintignant on A Self-Made Hero. This movie won the Best Screenplay Award at Cannes. It also received six César Award nominations.

In 2002, his film Read My Lips was nominated for nine Césars and won three. These awards were for Best Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Sound. His fourth movie, The Beat That My Heart Skipped, received 10 César nominations and won eight. These included Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Film Music, and Best Cinematography.

Audiard has won both the César Award for Best Film and the BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language twice. He won these in 2005 for The Beat That My Heart Skipped and in 2010 for A Prophet. He also won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival.

In 2009, A Prophet won the Grand Prix at Cannes. It also won the BAFTA award for Best Film Not in the English Language. The film was nominated for 13 César Awards and won nine of them. These included Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay.

His 2012 film Rust and Bone was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. It also received nominations for the BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language and the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film won the BFI London Film Festival Award for Best Film. In 2015, his seventh movie, Dheepan, won the Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

Jacques Audiard is one of the first filmmakers to be part of LaCinetek's project. This is a streaming platform where films are chosen by famous directors. His list of 61 favorite films includes comedies by Charlie Chaplin. He has also directed some music videos. One notable video was for the song Comme Elle Vient by Noir Désir. In this video, all the actors were deaf-mute and used sign language to show the song's lyrics.

On September 2, 2018, his first English-language American film, The Sisters Brothers, premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

In 2022, a five-episode special about Audiard's film-making process was released by Télérama. It was shared that Audiard was working on a script for an opera called Emilia Pérez. This was the first time Audiard wrote a film script by himself. Filming began in the summer of 2023 with Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana. The film premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2024. It won the Jury Prize, and its female cast won the Best Actress award at the festival. The film was later chosen as France's entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards.
