Jacques Audiard (born 30 April 1952) is a famous French film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is known for making movies that win many awards. Some of his big wins include an Academy Award (also known as an Oscar), two British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), and three Golden Globes.
In France, he holds the record for winning the most César Awards, which are France's national film awards. He has won thirteen Césars, including three times for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay all at once! He has also won four awards at the important Cannes Film Festival.
Jacques Audiard started his career writing movie scripts in the 1970s. He directed his first film, See How They Fall, in 1994. Later, he made other popular movies like A Self-Made Hero (1996) and Read My Lips (2001). His film The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005) was a big success, earning him a BAFTA and his first set of César awards.
Another major film was A Prophet (2009), a crime drama set in prison. It won him another set of César awards and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2015, his movie Dheepan won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, called the Palme d'Or.
He later directed his first English-language movie, a western called The Sisters Brothers (2018). More recently, he made his first Spanish-language musical, Emilia Pérez. Early Life and First Steps in Film
Jacques Audiard was born in Paris, France. His father, Michel Audiard, was also a well-known film director and screenwriter. Growing up around movies likely inspired Jacques.
He began his journey in filmmaking by writing scripts for other directors in the 1980s. Some of his early screenwriting work included films like Mortelle randonnée and Baxter.
A Career in Directing
In 1994, Jacques Audiard directed his first movie, See How They Fall. It was a road movie starring Mathieu Kassovitz and Jean-Louis Trintignant. This film won the César Award for best first film.
Two years later, he worked again with Kassovitz and Trintignant on A Self-Made Hero. This movie won the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for six César Awards.
In 2002, his film Read My Lips was nominated for nine Césars and won three, including Best Screenplay. His fourth movie, The Beat That My Heart Skipped, was a huge success. It received 10 César nominations and won eight, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.
Audiard has won both the César Award for Best Film and the BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language twice. He won for The Beat That My Heart Skipped in 2005 and for A Prophet in 2010. He also won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival for A Prophet.
In 2009, A Prophet won the Grand Prix at Cannes and the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language. It also won nine César Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
His 2012 film Rust and Bone was nominated for the top award, the Palme d'Or, at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. It also won the BFI London Film Festival Award for Best Film. In 2015, his seventh movie, Dheepan, won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.
Jacques Audiard is also one of the first filmmakers to share his favorite movies on LaCinetek, a streaming platform. His list includes many classic films, like Charlie Chaplin's comedies. He has even directed music videos, such as "Comme Elle Vient" by Noir Désir, which featured deaf actors using sign language.
In 2018, his first American film in English, The Sisters Brothers, premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
In 2022, it was announced that Audiard was working on a script for a musical film called Emilia Pérez. This was the first time he wrote a film script completely by himself. Filming began in 2023 with stars like Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana. The film premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May 2024. It won the Jury Prize and its female cast won the Best Actress award at the festival. Emilia Pérez was chosen as France's entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards.
