Fernanda Pinheiro Monteiro Torres (born September 15, 1965) is a famous Brazilian actress and writer. She is known for playing many different kinds of characters, from funny ones to serious ones. Fernanda was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and her parents, Fernando Torres and Fernanda Montenegro, were also actors. She has won many important awards, including the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her movie Love Me Forever or Never in 1986.
Recently, in 2024, Fernanda played Eunice Paiva in the movie I'm Still Here. For this role, she made history by becoming the first Brazilian, South American, and Portuguese-speaking actor to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. She was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress, following in her mother's footsteps as the second Brazilian actress to get this nomination.
Besides acting, Fernanda is also a successful writer. Her first book, The End, sold over 200,000 copies in Brazil and was translated into seven other languages. It was even made into a TV miniseries!

Fernanda Torres started acting when she was just thirteen years old. Her career has now lasted for more than forty years, covering theater, television, movies, and writing.
Acting in Movies
Fernanda's first movie was Innocência in 1983, when she was 17. Her next film, A Marvada Carne (1985), earned her the Best Actress award at the Gramado Festival. For Love Me Forever or Never (1986), Fernanda won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival and the Cuba Film Festival.
She has acted in 24 films. Some of her most well-known movies include:
- Excuse Me, I'm Going to Fight (1986), where she won Best Actress at the Nantes Film Festival.
- One Man's War (1991), where she acted alongside famous actors like Anthony Hopkins.
- Foreign Land (1996).
- Four Days in September (1997), which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
- The House of Sand (2005), directed by her husband, Andrucha Waddington.
In 2024, she played Eunice Paiva in the true-story film I'm Still Here. This movie was based on a book by Marcelo Rubens Paiva. For her amazing acting, Fernanda became the first Brazilian to win a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. She and her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, also became the first mother-daughter duo to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress since Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli.
On Stage: Theater Performances
When she was thirteen, Fernanda went to a theater school called Teatro O Tablado. Her very first play was Um Tango Argentino in 1978. Fernanda has acted in more than ten plays. She was highly praised for her roles in plays like Orlando (1989) and Two Women and a Corpse (2000).
She was also the first actress in the Companhia de Ópera Seca theater group. With this group, she starred in three plays, including The Flash and Crash Days (1991), where she acted with her mother. This play even toured in the United States and European countries. Her one-woman show A Casa dos Budas Ditosos, which started in 2003, was a huge hit and was seen by over one million people!
TV Shows
On television, Fernanda has starred in many popular comedy series and soap operas in Brazil. From 2001 to 2003, she was in the series Os Normais with Luiz Fernando Guimarães. This show was about the funny everyday situations of a couple named Rui and Vani. Os Normais became very popular, and many fans would stay home on Friday nights to watch it. The show's success led to two movies: Os Normais - O Filme (2003) and Os Normais 2: A Noite Mais Maluca de Todas (2009).
From 2011 to 2015, Fernanda starred with Andréa Beltrão in the comedy series Tapas & Beijos. For this show, she won several awards, including the Best Actress award at the Best of the Year Award.
In 2016, she wrote the script for a movie called O Juízo, which featured her mother in the cast. In 2018, Fernanda joined the second season of the series Sob Pressão as the new hospital administrator. She has also hosted TV projects like Minha Estupidez and Bicho Homem, and a podcast called The Playlist of My Life.
As a Writer
Fernanda started writing for newspapers and magazines in 2007. Since 2010, she has had a weekly column in the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo.
In 2014, she published her first novel, The End (original title: Fim). This book was very successful, selling over 200,000 copies in Brazil and being translated into seven languages. In 2023, Fernanda herself helped turn her novel into a 10-episode miniseries for the Brazilian streaming service Globoplay.
In 2017, Fernanda published her second novel, Glory and Its Litany of Horrors (original title: A Glória e Seu Cortejo de Horrores).
Personal Life
Fernanda Torres has Portuguese and Italian family roots. She is married to movie producer and director Andrucha Waddington. They have two sons, Joaquim (born in 2000) and Antônio (born in 2008). Fernanda is also a stepmother to João and Pedro, who are from Andrucha's first marriage.
