Tom and Jerry is a very famous animated cartoon series. It features a cat named Tom and a brown mouse named Jerry. The cartoons are mostly about their funny fights and chases. Even though the characters get hurt, they always bounce back quickly.

The original Tom and Jerry cartoons were created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. These two amazing artists also wrote and directed the early shorts. From 1940 to 1958, 114 Tom and Jerry cartoons were made by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) studio. These cartoons were so good that seven of them won an Academy Award for Animated Short Film.

Later, other studios continued the series. From 1961 to 1962, 13 more shorts were made by Rembrandt Films, led by Gene Deitch. Then, Chuck Jones produced another 34 shorts between 1963 and 1967. Even more recently, Hanna-Barbera made two new shorts in 2001 and 2005.

About Tom and Jerry

The main idea of Tom and Jerry is simple: a cat trying to catch a mouse. Tom is usually the one chasing, and Jerry is the clever mouse who always gets away. Their adventures are full of silly pranks and funny situations. The cartoons are known for their slapstick comedy, which means humor that comes from physical actions.

The characters rarely speak, so the stories are told through their actions and the music. This makes the cartoons easy to understand for everyone, no matter what language they speak. The music plays a big part in showing what's happening and how the characters are feeling.

Award-Winning Cartoons

Many Tom and Jerry cartoons have won special awards. The most important awards they received were the Academy Award for Animated Short Film. This award is also known as an Oscar. Winning an Oscar means a film is considered one of the best.

Here are the cartoons that won an Academy Award:

  • The Yankee Doodle Mouse (1943)
  • Mouse Trouble (1944)
  • Quiet Please! (1945)
  • The Cat Concerto (1946)
  • The Little Orphan (1948)
  • The Two Mouseketeers (1952)
  • Johann Mouse (1953)

These awards show how popular and well-made the original Tom and Jerry cartoons were.
