Joanna Quinn was born in Birmingham, England. She grew up in North London. She went to Highgate Wood Secondary School. After that, she studied art at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Joanna Quinn's first film was Girls Night Out in 1987. This film won three awards at the Annecy Film Festival. A funny character named Beryl first appeared in this film.

Beryl is a factory worker who often finds herself in funny situations. She became a popular character in many of Quinn's films:

  • In Body Beautiful (1990), Beryl works as a union representative. She deals with a tough workmate named Vince.
  • In Dreams and Desires - Family Ties (2006), Beryl becomes very interested in filmmaking. She is asked to record a friend's wedding.
  • Affairs of the Art (2021) shows Beryl totally obsessed with drawing. Her love for art takes over her whole life and home. This film won Best Animation at its first showing.
