Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Charmin is a popular brand of toilet paper. It is made by a big company called Procter & Gamble. Many families use Charmin toilet paper in their homes.

The Story of Charmin

Charmin started a long time ago, in 1928. It was first created by the Hoberg Paper Company. This company was located in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

In 1950, the Hoberg Paper Company changed its name. It became the Charmin Paper Company. They continued to make toilet paper, paper napkins, and other paper products.

A large company called Procter & Gamble (P&G) bought Charmin in 1957. Later, in 2008, P&G sold the rights to make and sell Charmin in Europe. Another company, SCA, bought these rights. In Europe, Charmin is now known by a different name, Cushelle.

Famous Charmin Ads

Charmin has had many memorable advertisements over the years. These ads helped people remember the brand.

Mr. Whipple's Message

From 1964 to 1985, an actor named Dick Wilson played a character called Mr. George Whipple. He was a fake grocer in the commercials. Mr. Whipple would always tell customers, "Please don't squeeze the Charmin!" He appeared in over 500 commercials.

The Charmin Bear

In the year 2000, a new character joined Charmin's ads. This was the friendly Charmin Bear. The bear started appearing when Charmin became available in Canada.

Today, the Charmin Bear is the official mascot for Charmin Ultra Strong and Charmin Ultra Soft products. The bear helps show how soft and strong the toilet paper is.

Charmin's Name Changes in Europe

In Europe, Charmin's name was changed in February 2010. The company SCA changed the name to Cushelle.

Cushelle also has its own mascot. This mascot is a cute koala. The Cushelle commercials often feature the voice of actor Robert Webb.

Charmin and the Environment

Some groups are concerned about how products affect the environment. In February 2009, Greenpeace asked people to think about using other toilet paper brands.

They said that Charmin toilet paper did not use recycled paper. They also mentioned that it used a process called ECF bleaching.

Charmin in Germany

In 2008, Charmin was renamed in Germany. It became known as Zewa. The Zewa ads did not have a mascot. However, the Charmin Bear did make a brief appearance in the very first Zewa commercial.
