Mary Beth Hurt (born Mary Beth Supinger on September 25, 1946) is an American actress who has now retired. She was famous for her work on both the stage (in plays) and in movies. She was even nominated three times for a special award called the Tony Award, which is a big honor for theater actors.
Mary Beth Hurt has been in many well-known films. Some of these include Interiors (1978), The World According to Garp (1982), The Age of Innocence (1993), and Six Degrees of Separation (1993). She also worked with her husband, filmmaker Paul Schrader, on movies like Light Sleeper (1992) and Affliction (1997).

Early life and education
Mary Beth Hurt was born as Mary Beth Supinger in Marshalltown, Iowa. Her parents were Delores Lenore and Forrest Clayton Supinger. Interestingly, when she was a child, her babysitter was another famous actress from Marshalltown, Jean Seberg.
Mary Beth loved acting and decided to study it in college. She went to the University of Iowa and then to New York University's Graduate Acting Program. This helped her prepare for her career as an actress.
Acting career
Mary Beth Hurt started her acting career on stage in New York in 1974. She quickly became well-known for her talent. She was nominated for three Tony Awards for her amazing performances in Broadway plays. These plays were Trelawny of the Wells, Crimes of the Heart, and Benefactors. For her role in Crimes of the Heart, she won an Obie Award, which is another important award for Off-Broadway theater.
Her first movie role was in Woody Allen's film Interiors (1978). In this movie, she played Joey, one of three sisters dealing with their family's problems. Her strong performance in Interiors earned her a BAFTA award, which is a major film award in the United Kingdom.
Mary Beth Hurt played many other memorable characters in movies. She was Laura in Chilly Scenes of Winter (1979) and Helen Holm Garp in The World According to Garp (1982). She also appeared as Regina Beaufort in Martin Scorsese's film The Age of Innocence (1993). In 1995, she even lent her voice to play Jean Seberg in a documentary called From the Journals of Jean Seberg.
In 2006, she was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female for her role in the movie The Dead Girl. Besides her Obie Award, she also received a Clarence Derwent Award in 1975 for being the Best Supporting Female in an Off-Broadway play called Love for Love.
Personal life
Mary Beth Hurt was married to actor William Hurt from 1971 to 1982. Later, in 1983, she married filmmaker Paul Schrader. They have two children, a daughter and a son. She is also very good friends with fellow actress Glenn Close. Glenn Close even worked as her understudy in the play Love for Love back in 1974.
Mary Beth Hurt retired from acting in 2018.
